ഏറെ കാലമായി കേൾക്കുന്നതും വിവിധ വേദികളിൽ ചർച്ച ചെയ്യുന്നതുമാണ്‌ മലയാള സിനിമയിലെ പ്രതിസന്ധി. സാമ്പത്തിക പ്രതിസന്ധി മാത്രമാണ്‌ മലയാള സിനിമ നേരിടുന്നതെന്ന നിലക്കാണ്‌ പലപ്പോഴും സംവാദങ്ങൾ ഉടലെടുക്കുന്നതും പുരോഗമിക്കുന്നതും. എന്നാൽ സാമ്പത്തികമെന്നപോലെ തന്നെ ക്രിയാത്മകം കൂടിയാണ്‌ മലയാള സിനിമയിലെ യഥാർത്ഥ പ്രതിസന്ധി. ആവിർഭാവം മുതൽ സിനിമയെന്നത്‌ അനിശ്ചിതത്വം നൽകുന്ന കലാ വ്യവസായമാണ്‌. സുനിശ്ചിതമായ ഒരു വിജയ സൂത്രവാക്യവും ഇതുവരെ ആരും കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുമില്ല.

ഒരു ചിത്രം വിജയിക്കുന്നതുകണ്ട്‌ അതിന്റെ പുതിയ പതിപ്പുകളിറക്കുന്നവർ പരാജയത്തിന്റെ കുഴി സ്വയം തോണ്ടുകയാണ്‌ ചെയ്യുന്നത്‌. പ്രദർശനത്തിനെത്തുന്ന സിനിമകളിൽ വൻവിജയം നേടുന്നവ, വിജയിക്കുന്നവ, മുടക്കു മുതൽ കഷ്ടി തിരിച്ചു പിടിക്കുന്നവ, പരാജയം ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങുന്നവ, എട്ടുതട്ടിൽ പൊട്ടുന്നവ എന്നിങ്ങനെ പോകുന്നു വേർതിരിവുകൾ. മലയാള സിനിമ കലാപരമായും കച്ചവടപരമായും ഉന്നതിയിൽ നിന്നിരുന്ന അറുപതുകളും എഴുപതുകളും പരിശോധിക്കുമ്പോൾ വിജയിക്കുന്നവ കൂടുതലും വമ്പൻ പരാജയങ്ങൾ കുറവുമായിരുന്നുവേന്നും കാണാം. മുതൽ മുടക്കു നഷ്ടപ്പെടാതെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുന്ന ഇടനില ചിത്രങ്ങളും ധാരാളമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട്‌ എൺപതുകളുടെ രണ്ടാം പകുതിയോടെ തുടങ്ങി തൊണ്ണൂറുകളോടെ വന്ന സ്ഥിതി വിശേഷം ഹിറ്റുകൾ വിരളവും ഫ്ലോപ്പുകൾ സർവ്വസാധാരണവും എന്നതാണ്‌. മൊത്തം ഉൽപാദനത്തിന്റെ 70 ശതമാനവും നഷ്ടമാകുന്ന സ്ഥിതിവിശേഷമാണ്‌ ഇന്ന്‌ നിലിനിൽക്കുന്നത്‌.

താരരാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ തലവിലയിൽ വന്ന വമ്പൻ വർദ്ധന ഇതിന്‌ ഒരു കാരണം മാത്രമാണ്‌. താരരാജാക്കന്മാരെയും ചക്രവർത്തിമാരെയും ചക്രവർത്തിമാരെയും തേടിപോകുന്നതും സംവിധായകരും നിർമ്മാതാക്കളും തന്നെയാണല്ലോ. കുതിച്ചുയർന്ന്‌ ആകാശംമുട്ടിയ നിർമ്മാണച്ചിലവ്‌ നിയന്ത്രണമില്ലാതെ നിർമ്മാണത്തിനു മുതിരുന്നവർ ഈയാംപാറ്റകളെപോലെ അഗ്നിയുടെ ചൂടിൽ ചിറകുകരിഞ്ഞ്‌ വീഴുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. നല്ല പ്രമേയത്തിന്റെയും തിരകഥയുടെയും അഭാവം തുടങ്ങി സിനിമ സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ നിന്നും ജീവിതഗന്ധിയായ ഇതിവൃത്തങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും അകന്നകന്നു പോകുന്നതും അപചയകാരണങ്ങളായി കാണാവുന്നതാണ്‌.

സൂപ്പർതാരങ്ങളുടെ മലയാള സിനിക്ക്‌ താങ്ങാനാവാത്ത പ്രതിഫലവും കാരണമായിക്കാണാമെങ്കിലും സിനിമക്ക്‌ സൂപ്പർതാരങ്ങൾ തന്നെ വേണമെന്ന്‌ നിർബ്ബന്ധമില്ലല്ലോ. ചെറിയ ബജറ്റിൽ പുതിയ താരങ്ങളെ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി ചിത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള ആത്മധൈര്യം നിർമ്മാതാക്കളും സംവിധായകരും കാണിക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നതാണ്‌ പ്രശ്നം. എഴുപതുകളിൽ സത്യനും നസീറും മധുവും മറ്റും താരരാജക്കന്മാരായി വിരാജിക്കുന്ന കാലത്തു തന്നെയാണ്‌ പി.എൻ.മേനോൻ പുതിയ താരങ്ങളുമായി ചെമ്പരത്തി യെടുത്ത്‌ വിജയം കൈവരിച്ചതു. പുതുമ പ്രേക്ഷകർ ഏക്കാളത്തും സ്വീകരിക്കാറുണ്ട്‌. കാലാകാലങ്ങളിൽ പ്രതിസന്ധി രൂക്ഷമെന്നും നിർമ്മാണം സ്തംഭനത്തിലെന്നുമൊക്കെ കേൾക്കാറുണ്ടെങ്കിലും സിനിമാ നിർമ്മാണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നിർബ്ബാധം തുടരുക തന്നെയാണ്‌ പതിവ്‌.

സൂപ്പർതാരങ്ങളുടെ പ്രതിഫലം കുറച്ച്‌ മലയാള സിനിമയെ രക്ഷിക്കണമെന്ന ആവശ്യത്തിന്‌ ഒരു പതിറ്റാണ്ടിലേറെ പഴക്കമുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അതിനൊന്നും ഒരു വിഭാഗവും തയ്യാറായിട്ടുമില്ല. താരപ്രതിഫലം ആകാശത്തേക്ക്‌ ഉയരുകയല്ലാതെ ഭൂമിയിലേക്കൊരിക്കലും തിരിച്ചു വരാറില്ലല്ലോ. എന്നാൽ സൂപ്പർതാരങ്ങളെ മറികടന്ന്‌ എങ്ങനെ ചിത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കാമെന്ന ചിന്ത വേണ്ടത്ര സജീവമാകാറില്ല. സൂപ്പർതാരങ്ങൾക്കു ചുറ്റും ഭ്രമണം ചെയ്യുകയാണ്‌ സംവിധായകരും സിനിമയും. പുതിയ സംവിധായകർക്കും താരങ്ങൾക്കും അവസരമൊരുക്കുന്നതിൽ തമിഴ്‌ സിനിമ ഏറെ താൽപ്പര്യം കാണിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഇവിടെ സ്ഥിതി ഏറെ ശോചനീയമാണ്‌. പുതിയ സംവിധായകർക്കുപോലും മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെയോ മോഹൻലാലീൻറെയോ ഡേറ്റ്‌ ലഭ്യമാണെങ്കിലേ നിർമ്മാതാവിനെ ലഭിക്കൂ എന്ന അവസ്ഥ. പിന്നീട്‌ സ്വന്തം കഴിവു തെളിയിച്ച പല സംവിധായകരും ഇങ്ങിനെ സൂപ്പർതാരങ്ങളായ മോഹൻലാളിന്റേയും മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെയും അനുഗ്രഹാശിസ്സുകളോടെയും സഹായസഹകരണത്തോടെയും രംഗത്തുവന്നരാണ്‌.

സൂപ്പർതാരങ്ങളില്ലാതെ വൻ വിജയം നേടിയ ക്ലാസ്മേറ്റ്സ്‌ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത ലാൽജോസിന്റെ തുടക്കം മമ്മൂട്ടി ചിത്രമായ ഒരു മറവത്തൂർ കനവിലൂടെയായിരുന്നു. അതുപോലെ ബ്ലെസ്സിയും (കാഴ്ച) അൻവർ റഷീദും (രാജമാണിക്യം) മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ താരപ്പൊലിമയിലൂടെ രംഗത്തുവന്നവരാണ്‌. തുടരെ ഹിറ്റ്‌ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ സംഭാവന ചെയ്ത അൻവർ റഷീദിന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ചിത്രത്തിലെ നായകൻ മോഹൻലാലും (ചോട്ടാമുംബൈ) മൂന്നാമത്തെ ചിത്രം അണ്ണൻതമ്പി മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ ഇരട്ട വേഷംകൊണ്ട്‌ ശ്രദ്ധ നേടിയതുമാണ്‌.

തമിഴിലാണെങ്കിൽ വെയിൽ, പരുത്തിവീരൻ തുടങ്ങിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളിൽ സംവിധായകൻ മാത്രമല്ല താരങ്ങളും പുതുമുഖങ്ങൾ തന്നെ. തമിഴിൽ വൻ വിജയം നേടിയ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യപുരം സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തഭിനയിച്ച ശശികുമാർ പുതുമുഖ സങ്കൽപത്തിന്‌ പുതിയ പരിവേഷം സമ്മാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇത്തരം സംരംഭങ്ങൾ മലയാള സിനിമയിൽ നടക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നതാണ്‌ ഏറെ ഖേദകരം. പക്ഷേ തമിഴിന്റെ പരീക്ഷണ വ്യഗ്രതയും വഴിമാറി നടപ്പും അനുസരിക്കാൻ മലയാള സിനിമ ഇനിയും വിസമ്മതിച്ചാൽ അത്‌ പ്രതിസന്ധിയുടെ ആഴവും വ്യാപ്തിയും കൂട്ടുകയേയുള്ളു.

പുതിയ നായിക നായകന്മാരെയും അണിയറ പ്രവർത്തകരെയും അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ തന്നെ പ്രധാനമാണ്‌ നല്ല സാഹിത്യകൃതികൾ സിനിമയിലേക്ക്‌ മൊഴിമാറ്റം നടത്തുക എന്നതും. മലയാള സിനിമക്ക്‌ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ആദ്യ സ്വർണ്ണമെഡൽ നേടിക്കൊടുത്ത ചെമ്മീൻ (രാമുകാര്യാട്ട്‌) തകഴിയുടെ വിഖ്യാതമായ നോവലിന്റെ അഭ്രാവിഷ്കാരമെന്നതുപോലെ ഉറൂബിന്റെയും, പാറപ്പുറത്തിന്റെയും, എം.ടി.വാസുദേവൻനായരുടെയും നോവലുകൾക്ക്‌ ചലച്ചിത്ര ഭാഷ്യം രചിച്ച സംവിധായകർ കലാപരമായും വാണിജ്യപരമായും സിനിമയുടെ വളർച്ചയിൽ സ്വാധീനം ചെലുത്തുകയാണ്‌ ചെയ്തത്‌. സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ നിന്ന്‌ സിനിമയിലെത്തിയ എം.ടിയും പത്മരാജനും മറ്റും മികച്ച തിരക്കഥകൾകൊണ്ട്‌ മലയാള സിനിമയെ സമ്പന്നമാക്കിയവരിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.

കഴിഞ്ഞ ഏതാനും വർഷങ്ങളിലെ ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ വിജയപരാജയങ്ങളുടെ കണക്കെടുക്കുമ്പോൾ സൂപ്പർതാരങ്ങളുടെ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യം മാത്രം ഒരു ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ വിജയം ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുന്നില്ലെന്നു കാണുവാനാകും. കഥയും അവതരണവും സംവിധായകന്റെ മികവും എല്ലാം വിജയഘടകങ്ങളായി മാറുന്നു. ലാൽജോസിന്റെ തന്നെ സൂപ്പർസ്റ്റാർ ചിത്രം പട്ടാളം (മമ്മൂട്ടി) പൊട്ടിയപ്പോൾ ക്ലാസ്മേറ്റ്സ്‌, അറബിക്കഥ എന്നിവ വിജയം നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ വർഷത്തെ കാര്യമെടുത്താൽത്തന്നെ പുതുമയും അവതരണവുമായെത്തിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളാണ്‌ ജനങ്ങൾ സ്വീകരിച്ചതെന്നുകാണാം. അക്കു അക്ബർ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത വെറുതെ ഒരു ഭാര്യ (ജയറാം) വൻ വിജയം നേടിയപ്പോൾ സത്യൻ അന്തിക്കാടിന്റെ കുടുംബചിത്രം ഭാഗ്യദേവതയും കുടുംബസദസ്സിനെ ആകർഷിച്ച്‌ വിജയം നേടിയ പടമാണ്‌. മലയാള സിനിമയിൽ നിർമ്മാണ രംഗം സജീവമാണെങ്കിലും പ്രദർശന രംഗത്തെ അനിശ്ചിതത്വം തുടരുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യുന്നു.

എന്റെ അമ്പതാംപിറന്നാൾ ദിവസം രാവിലെ ഞാൻ ഭാര്യയുമായി സംസാരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഗംഭീരന്മാരായ നാലഞ്ചുപേർ വീട്ടിലേക്കു കയറിവന്നു. രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിന്റെ മേലിടങ്ങളിൽ എവിടെയോ ഒക്കെ ഇവരെ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന്‌ ഒരു തോന്നൽ.
വന്നവർ പറഞ്ഞു: ഈ നാടിന്റെ ഹൃദയമിടിപ്പുകളാണ്‌ അങ്ങയുടെ തൂലിക പകർത്തുന്നത്‌. സാമൂഹികതിന്മകൾക്കുനേരെ ഇത്ര ധൈര്യമായി കൂരമ്പുകൾ എയ്യുന്ന കവി വേറെയില്ല. നിഷ്പക്ഷമായി നീ മുഴക്കുന്ന ധർമ്മകാഹളം നാടിന്നു രക്ഷാമന്ത്രമാണ്‌. അടുത്ത വർഷം ഇതേ ദിവസം അങ്ങേയ്ക്ക്‌ അമ്പതു വയസ്സു പൂർത്തിയാകും എന്നു ഞങ്ങളറിഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങയുടെ ഫിഫ്റ്റിപൂർത്തി നാട്ടുകാരുടെ മഹോത്സവമായി ആഘോഷിക്കണമെന്നും ഞങ്ങളുടെ പാർട്ടി ഇന്നലെ നിശ്ചയിച്ചു.
ഫിഫ്റ്റിപൂർത്തിയോ? അത്ഭുതം കലർന്ന എന്റെ ചോദ്യത്തിന്‌ അവർ ഇങ്ങനെ മറുപടി നൽകി.
അതേ, കവിസാറേ! ഷഷ്ടിപൂർത്തി പോലെ ഫിഫ്റ്റിപൂർത്തിയും. പലതിന്റെയും ശതാബ്ദി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന നാം അതിന്റെ പകുതി, അമ്പത്‌, അഘോഷിക്കുന്നതല്ലേ അറുപത്‌ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നതിനേക്കാൾ യുക്തി? അതുതന്നെ ഫിഫ്റ്റിപൂർത്തി.

വളരെ പഴക്കമുള്ള ഒരു മൂന്നുനില മന്ദിരമായിരുന്നു കൊളംബൊയിലെ വൈ.എം.സി.എ കെട്ടിടം. 102 വർഷം മുമ്പ്‌ ബ്രട്ടീഷ്‌ ഭരണകാലത്ത്‌ നിർമ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടതാണിതെന്ന്‌ അവിടെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നു.
രണ്ടാംനിലയിലായിരുന്നു എന്റെ മുറി. പഴയ കെട്ടിടമാണെങ്കിലും വൃത്തിയും വെടിപ്പുമുള്ള ർറൂം. ഫർണീച്ചറുകൾ, എന്തിന്‌ ബാത്ത്‌ർറൂം ഫിറ്റിംഗ്സ്‌ ഉൾപ്പെടെ വാഷ്ബേസിൻ പോലും പഴയ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്‌ നിർമ്മിതമായിരുന്നു. അവയൊക്കെ ശരിക്കും ഒരു പുരാവസ്തുശേഖരത്തെയാണ്‌ അനുസ്മരിപ്പിച്ചതു.
ആദ്യദിവസം, ബാക്കിയുള്ള പകൽ മുഴുവൻ വിശ്രമത്തിനായി ഞാൻ മാറ്റിവച്ചു. മാത്രമല്ല ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക്‌ യാത്ര വന്നതിനാൽ അടുത്ത നാലഞ്ചു ദിവസത്തെ പരിപാടികൾ സ്വയം തയ്യാറാക്കാനുമുണ്ട്‌.
വൈ.എം.സി.എയുടെ വകയായി ഒരു ഭക്ഷണശാഖയുണ്ട്‌ താഴെ എല്ലാ വിഭവങ്ങളും ലഭ്യമായിരുന്നു അവിടെ, കേരള വിഭവമായ പുട്ടും കടലയും വരെ. പേരോർമ്മയില്ലാത്ത ഒരു ശ്രീലങ്കൻ വിഭവമായിരുന്നു അന്നത്തെ അത്താഴത്തിനായി ഞാൻ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്‌. അധികം മസാലക്കൂട്ടുകളൊന്നുമില്ലാത്ത ഒരു നല്ല ഭക്ഷണം. പക്ഷേ, എരിവും മധുരവും ഒരുപോലെ ചേർത്ത ആ വിചിത്ര ഭക്ഷണത്തിന്‌ വലിയ രുചിയൊന്നും തോന്നിയില്ല.
ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ ആദ്യരാത്രി. മുകളിൽ കറങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ആ പുരാതന സീലിങ്‌ ഫാൻ മാത്രമാണ്‌ ഇടയ്ക്കെങ്കിലും എന്റെ ഉറക്കത്തെ അലോസരപ്പെടുത്തിയത്‌. മുനയും മൂക്കും മുലയുമൊക്കെയുള്ള കുട്ടികളുടെ കളിപ്പമ്പരംപോലെ അൽപ്പമൊന്നു കുലുങ്ങിവിറച്ച്‌ കറങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ആ അതിപുരാതന ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്‌ പങ്ക. എപ്പോഴാണ്‌ എന്റെമേൽ പൊട്ടിവീഴുക എന്ന വിചാരം ഉറക്കത്തിന്റെ ഇടവേളകളിൽ ഒരു ദുസ്വപ്നം പോലെ തന്നെ അസ്വസ്ഥപ്പെടുത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. ഒന്നും സംഭവിച്ചില്ല, അടുത്ത പകൽ പിറന്നു വീഴുമ്പോഴും പിന്നീട്‌ ഞാൻ മുറിവിട്ടൊഴിയുംവരെയും. എത്രയോ പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി ആ പങ്ക ഇതേമട്ടിൽ കറങ്ങി കാറ്റുവീശിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
രാവിലെ ജനാലകർട്ടൻ വശത്തേയ്ക്ക്‌ പൂർണ്ണമായും നീക്കി പുറംകാഴ്ചകളിലേയ്ക്കൊന്നു കണ്ണുപായിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ്‌ അതു കണ്ടത്‌, രണ്ടു ഇരട്ടകെട്ടിടങ്ങൾ (ട്വിൻ ടവേഴ്സ്‌). വളരെ ഉയരമുണ്ട്‌ മനോഹരമായ ആ ആധുനികമന്ദിരങ്ങൾക്ക്‌ തീവ്രവാദി ആക്രമണത്താൽ തകർന്നുപോയ ന്യൂയോർക്ക്‌ മന്ദിരങ്ങളെയാണ്‌ അവ അനുസ്മരിപ്പിച്ചതു. കൊളംബൊ നഗരത്തിലെ ഫോർട്ട്‌ ഏരിയ ആവണം അത്‌. നഗരത്തിലെ ബഹുനിലക്കെട്ടിടങ്ങൾ മുഴുവൻ ആ ഭാഗത്താണ്‌.
കൊളംബൊയിലെ എന്റെയീ ആദ്യ ദിവസം, സ്വന്തമായി നഗരം നടന്നു കാണാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.
വൈ.എം.സി.എ റസ്റ്റോറന്റിൽ നിന്നും ഒരു അമേരിക്കൻ ബ്രേക്ക്ഫാസ്റ്റും കഴിച്ച്‌ ഞാൻ പുറത്തിറങ്ങി. ഫോർട്ട്‌ ഏരിയയിലേക്ക്‌ ഞാൻ മെല്ലെ നടന്നു. വെയിൽ പടർന്നു തുടങ്ങിയെങ്കിലും വലിയ ചൂടില്ല. അപ്പോൾ ഇതാണ്‌ നഗരത്തിന്റെ ഹൃദയഭാഗം. ർറൂംജനാലയിലൂടെ ഞാൻ കണ്ട ഇരട്ടകെട്ടിടങ്ങൾക്ക്‌ അകമ്പടി സേവിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്‌ മറ്റു കുറേയധികം അംബരചുംബികളായ മണിമന്ദിരങ്ങൾ ചുറ്റും ചിതറിനിൽപ്പുണ്ട്‌.
എനിക്ക്‌ മടക്ക ടിക്കറ്റ്‌ റീകൺഫേം ചെയ്യേണ്ട എയർലങ്കയുടെ കൊളംബോ കേന്ദ്രഓഫീസ്‌ ഈ ഇരട്ടമന്ദിരങ്ങളിലൊന്നിന്റെ താഴത്തെ നിലയിലാണ്‌. ആ ഭംഗിയുള്ള കെട്ടിടവും കാണാം, ടിക്കറ്റും ശരിയാക്കാം എന്നു കരുതി, കൊളംബൊയിലെ അന്നത്തെ ആദ്യകർമ്മം അതാക്കാൻ ഞാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.
തകർക്കപ്പെട്ട ന്യൂയോർക്ക്‌ ടവേഴ്സിന്റെ അതേ പേരാണ്‌ ഈ മന്ദിരങ്ങൾക്കും കൊടുത്തിട്ടുള്ളത്‌. വേൾഡ്‌ ട്രേഡ്‌ സെന്റർ. 37 നിലകൾ വീതം ഉള്ള ഇവയാണ്‌ കൊളംബൊയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയരമേറിയ കെട്ടിടങ്ങൾ. വളരെ മനോഹരമായ നിർമ്മിതി തന്നെ. ഈ അത്യാധുനിക കെട്ടിടങ്ങൾ നിറയെ വലിയ വ്യാപാരസ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെയും സർക്കാരിന്റെയും കേന്ദ്ര ആഫീസുകൾ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു.
ഞാൻ ശ്രീലങ്ക സന്ദർശിക്കുമ്പോൾ ചന്ദ്രിക കുമാരതുംഗെ ആയിരുന്നു അന്നത്തെ പ്രസിഡന്റ്‌. തമിഴ്‌ പുലികളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ആക്രമണ ഭീഷണി കാരണം നഗരം മുഴുവൻ പോലീസ്‌/പട്ടാള നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലായിരുന്നു. ഞാൻ താമസിച്ച വൈ.എം.സി.എ ഹോസ്റ്റലിനു തൊട്ടടുത്ത്‌, ഒരു വിളിപ്പാടകലെയാണ്‌ ചന്ദ്രിക കുമാരതുംഗെ താമസിക്കുന്നത്‌. അവരുടെ ഔദ്യോഗിക വസതിയാണത്‌. അതിനാൽ ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിനു ചുറ്റും എപ്പോഴും കനത്ത പട്ടാള കാവലുണ്ട്‌. പ്രധാന റോഡിന്റെ അരികിൽ അടുത്തടുത്തായി മണൽച്ചാക്കുകൾ കൊണ്ടുള്ള ചുറ്റുമതിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച്‌ അതിനുള്ളിൽ പുറത്തേയ്ക്കു നീട്ടിയ യന്ത്രത്തോക്കുമായി കാവൽനിൽക്കുന്ന പട്ടാളക്കാർ, തമ്മിൽ വല്ലാത്ത ഭയാശങ്കയുണർത്തും. അത്ര കടുത്ത ഭീഷണിയാണ്‌ സ്വന്തം ജീവന്റെ പേരിൽ ചന്ദ്രിക നേരിടുന്നത്‌.
ഹോസ്റ്റലിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ എന്റെ കൈയ്യിലെ ക്യാമറ കണ്ട്‌ റിസപ്ഷൻ കൗണ്ടറിലിരിക്കുന്ന ചെറുപ്പക്കാരൻ മൂന്നാര്റിയിപ്പു നൽകി, സൂക്ഷിക്കണം, വിദേശിയുമാണ്‌, കാവൽ പട്ടാളക്കാർക്കു സംശയം ജനിപ്പിക്കുംവിധം പൊതുകെട്ടിടങ്ങളുടെ ഫോട്ടോ എടുക്കാൻ ഒരിക്കലും ശ്രമിക്കരുത്‌.
ഫോട്ടോ എടുക്കുന്ന വിഷയത്തിൽ ഇരട്ടമന്ദിരങ്ങളെ ഒഴിവാക്കി ഞാൻ മുന്നോട്ടു നീങ്ങി. റോഡരികിലും വൻ കെട്ടിടങ്ങൾക്കു മുമ്പിലുമൊക്കെ തോക്കുധാരികളായ നിരവധി കാവൽഭടന്മാരെ കാണുകയും ചെയ്തു.
പ്രധാനറോഡ്‌, താരതമ്യേന വൃത്തിയും ഭംഗിയായും സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. വശങ്ങളിൽ നിരവധി വ്യാപാരസ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾ, പരിഷ്കരിച്ച ഒരു കൊച്ചി പട്ടണത്തെ അനുസ്മരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കൊളംബൊ നഗരമെന്നു തോന്നി.
ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക്‌ ഏറ്റവും തിരക്കുള്ള ഒരു വെജിറ്റേറിയൻ ഹോട്ടലിൽ ഭക്ഷണത്തിനു കയറി. തൂശനിലയിൽ വിളമ്പിത്തന്ന ഊണെങ്കിലും ഒപ്പമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു ഡസൻ കറികൾക്കും വലിയ രുചിയൊന്നും തോന്നിയില്ല. ആ സാധാരണ ഊണിന്‌ 100 രൂപ (50 ഇന്ത്യൻ രൂപ)യാണവർ ഈടാക്കിയത്‌.
നഗരം ഒറ്റയ്ക്കു കറങ്ങി നടന്നു കാണുന്നതിനിടെ ആദ്യദിവസം കടന്നുപോയി.
രണ്ടാംനാൾ ബീച്ച്‌ ഏരിയ സന്ദർശനമാണ്‌ നിശ്ചയിച്ചതു. ഏറെ മനോഹരമായ ഒരു ബീച്ചുണ്ട്‌ കൊളംബൊയിൽ. സായാഹ്നങ്ങളിൽ ഈ കടൽത്തീരം വിദേശടൂറിസ്റ്റുകളെക്കൊണ്ട്‌ നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കും. കടലിന്റെ ആഴംകുറഞ്ഞ ചില തീരവശങ്ങളിൽ ജലകേളികൾക്കായി സൗകര്യമൊരുക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. ബീച്ചിന്റെ പരിസരം മുഴുവൻ കൗതുകവസ്തുക്കളുടെ വിൽപ്പനയ്ക്കായി ശ്രീലങ്കൻ ചെറുപ്പക്കാരും, യുവതികളും കറങ്ങി നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്‌. ശ്രീലങ്കൻ സ്ത്രീകളുടെ വേഷം സാരി തന്നെ. ഒരു പ്രത്യേകരീതിയിലാണ്‌ അവർ സാരി ധരിക്കുന്നത്‌. ഈ വേഷത്തെ പ്രാദേശികമായി ലാമൺസാരി എന്നാണു സിംഹളഭാഷയിൽ പറയുക.
ബീച്ചിലിരുന്നാൽ പിന്നിൽ ചില നക്ഷത്രഹോട്ടലുകളുടെ ഉയർന്ന കെട്ടിടങ്ങൾ കാണാം. തൊട്ടരികിൽ തന്നെയാണ്‌ പഞ്ചനക്ഷത്ര ഹോട്ടലുകളായ ടാജും, ഹിൽറ്റണും. നേരത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിച്ച ട്വിൻടവറുകളുടെ മേലറ്റവും ബീച്ചിലിരുന്നു ചെരിഞ്ഞു നോക്കിയാൽ ചെറുതായി കാണാം.
ഈ ട്വിൻടവറുകളെ ആക്രമിക്കാൻ ഇത്‌ ന്യൂയോർക്ക്‌ സ്ഫോടനത്തിനു മുമ്പാണ്‌ എൽ.ടി.ടി.ക്കാർ ഒരു പാഴ്ശ്രമം നടത്തി പരാജയപ്പെട്ടതായി കേട്ടു. ലക്ഷ്യം തെറ്റിയ ആയുധം വന്നു പതിച്ചതു തൊട്ടടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു ഫൈവ്സ്റ്റാർ ഹോട്ടലിലാണ്‌. ഭാഗ്യത്തിന്‌ കെട്ടിടത്തിന്റെ കുറേ ഭാഗം തകർന്നതല്ലാതെ ആളപായമൊന്നും ഉണ്ടായില്ല.

രാത്രിയിൽ കൊളംബൊ നഗരം അതീവമനോഹരം തന്നെ.ബഹുരാഷ്ട്ര കമ്പനികളുടെ ഓഫീസുകളും ഷോർറൂമുകളും, വലിയ വ്യാപാരസ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും നിയോൺ ബോർഡുകളുടെ ദീപപ്രഭയിൽ മുങ്ങിനിൽക്കുന്ന കാഴ്ച, ഒരു പാശ്ചാത്യരാജ്യത്തെ ഏതെങ്കിലും ചെറുപട്ടണത്തെ അനുസ്മരിപ്പിക്കും.
ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ വരുമാന മാർഗ്ഗങ്ങളിലൊന്ന്‌ മറ്റു രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്ക്‌ തൊഴിലാളികളെ സപ്ലെ ചെയ്യുക എന്നത്‌. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ നിന്നുള്ളതിനേക്കാൾ കുറഞ്ഞ ശമ്പളത്തിന്‌ ഗൾഫ്‌ നാടുകളിലേയ്ക്ക്‌ ശ്രീലങ്കൻ തൊഴിലാളികൾ പണിയെടുക്കാനെത്തുന്നു. ഫിലിപ്പീൻസിൽ നിന്നും ഉണ്ട്‌ ഇത്തരം തൊഴിലാളി പ്രവാഹം. ഇത്‌ നമ്മുടെ വിദേശ തൊഴിൽ മേഖലയെ ചെറുതായൊന്നുമല്ല ഇപ്പോൾ ബാധിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്‌.

കനാൽത്തീരത്തുകൂടി പതിവുപോലെ അയാൾ അന്നും അന്തിവെയിലിനെതിരെ നടന്നു. കൈയിൽ മൂന്നു വയസ്സായ ലാബ്രഡോർ വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട നായെ ലിഷാൽ പിടിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. പകൽവെളിച്ചത്തിൽ തിളങ്ങി ഒഴുകുന്ന കനാലും അതിനെ തഴുകിയെത്തുന്ന തണുത്ത കാറ്റും അയാൾക്കേക്കാളവും ശാന്തി നൽകിയിരുന്നു.

ശക്തിയായി മഴപെയ്യുമ്പോൾ രണ്ടാം നിലയിലെ ചില്ലുജനാലയ്ക്കരുകിൽ അയാൾ കനാലിനെ നോക്കി നിൽക്കും. മഴ പെയ്യുമ്പോൾ കനാൽപെട്ടെന്നു നിറയുമെങ്കിലും അത്‌ കരകവിഞ്ഞൊഴുകുന്നത്‌ ഒരിക്കലും കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. കുത്തൊഴുക്കിന്റെ ശക്തി പലപ്പോഴും കിടിലം കൊള്ളിക്കുമെങ്കിലും ഏതോ അജ്ഞാതമായൊരു ബന്ധം ആ കനാലിനോടു തോന്നിയിരുന്നു.
എന്നും രാവിലെ ഉണരുമ്പോൾ ജനാലയുടെ കർട്ടൺ നീക്കി കനാലിനെ നോക്കിനിൽക്കും. രാത്രികാലങ്ങളിലും ഈ പതിവു തുടരും. അപ്പോൾ കനാലിനു കുറുകെ കടന്നുപോകുന്ന വഴിയിറമ്പിൽ തെളിഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്ന നിയോൺ വിളക്കുകൾ അവ്യക്തമായി മാത്രം കനാലിനെ കാണിച്ചു കൊടുത്തിരുന്നു.

വീടിന്റെ പുറകുവശത്തെ പുൽമേട്‌ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ കനാലിന്റെ തീരമായി. വൈകുന്നേരങ്ങളിൽ കുട്ടികൾ ചൂണ്ടയിട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്‌ കൗതുകമുള്ള കാഴ്ചയായിരുന്നു. എങ്കിലും മത്സ്യങ്ങളെ കുരുക്കി കൂടകളിലേക്ക്‌ എറിയുന്നത്‌ കാണുവാൻ അയാൾ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടില്ല.
കനാലിന്റെ തീരം മെയിലുകൾ നീണ്ടു കിടന്നു. പുൽമേടുകൾ കൊണ്ട്‌ തീരം പുതഞ്ഞു കിടന്നിരുന്നു. എങ്കിലും പുല്ലുകൾക്കിടയിലും ഒരു വഴിച്ചാല്‌ തെളിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.
അന്ന്‌ അയാളും നായും വളരെ ദൂരം നടന്നു. എത്ര ദൂരം കടന്നുപോയെന്ന്‌ നിശ്ചയമില്ലായിരുന്നു. നേരം ഇരുട്ടിത്തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ കനാലിനെ മുറിച്ചു പോകുന്ന പാതവക്കത്തെ കലുങ്കിൽ വിവശനായി അയാൾ ഇരുന്നു. കാഴ്ചയിൽ എഴുപത്തഞ്ച്‌ തോന്നിക്കുമെങ്കിലും അറുപതുവയസ്സേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നൊള്ളു. നടന്നു നടന്ന്‌ കിതയ്ക്കുകയോ കഷണ്ടി കയറിയ തല വിയർക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ അയാൾ എവിടെയെങ്കിലും ഇരുന്നു വിശ്രമിക്കും.

അന്നു നന്നെ ഇരുട്ടിയപ്പോൾ മാത്രമാണ്‌ അയാൾ വീട്ടിലെത്തിയത്‌. നായെ സ്വതന്ത്രമായി ലീഷ്‌ അഴിച്ച്‌ ബാക്ക്‌ യാർഡിൽ വിട്ടു. അതിന്റെ പാത്രത്തിലേക്ക്‌ കുറച്ച്‌ പുരിന ഡോഗ്‌ ഫുഡ്‌ ഇട്ടുകൊടുത്തു. പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക്‌ പാത്രത്തിൽ കുറച്ചു ജലവും നിറച്ചു. അതായിരുന്നു ആ നായയുടെ അത്താഴം.
ബാക്ക്‌ യാർഡിൽ ഭാര്യയും കുട്ടികളും ചേർന്ന്‌ ഒരു പച്ചക്കറിത്തോട്ടം പിടിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. അതിൽ നനയ്ക്കുവാനല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നിനും അയാൾക്കു കഴിയുമായിരുന്നില്ല. ഡയബറ്റിക്സും ഹായ്‌ ബ്ലഡ്പ്രഷറും തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട്‌ പത്തു വർഷം കഴിഞ്ഞു. മരുനന്നുകളുടെ ശക്തികൊണ്ട്‌ ഇപ്പോഴും ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഭാര്യയ്ക്ക്‌ അയാളിലും വളരെ പ്രായക്കുറവുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ലേറ്റ്‌ മാരേജിൽ, അയാളുടെ ഉയർന്ന ഉദ്യോഗവും പണവും ചെറുപ്പക്കാരിയായ ഭാര്യയെ സമ്പാദിക്കാൻ സഹായിച്ചു.

ഈ അറുപതാമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ കുട്ടികൾ വളരെ പ്രായം കുറഞ്ഞവരായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട്‌ അവരെ ഒരു കാര്യവും ഏൽപ്പിക്കുവാൻ പറ്റുമായിരുന്നില്ല. 14 വയസ്സും 12 വയസ്സുമുള്ള രണ്ടു പെൺകുട്ടികൾ.
അയാൾ അമേരിക്കയിൽ എത്തിയപ്പോൾ ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്ന കമ്പനി രണ്ടു വർഷം മുമ്പ്‌ പൂട്ടിപ്പോയി. പലയിടത്തും ജോലി തേടിയെങ്കിലും ആരും ജോലി നൽകിയില്ല. പ്രായാധിക്യം തന്നെയാണ്‌ കാരണമെന്ന്‌ അയാൾക്കറിയാമായിരുന്നു.
സമയാസമയം മരുന്നുകൾ കഴിച്ചും കനാലിന്റെ ഒഴിക്കിലേക്ക്‌ നോക്കി സമയം കളഞ്ഞും തോട്ടം നനച്ചും അയാളുടെ ദിവസങ്ങൾ നീങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.
ചെറുപ്പക്കാരിയായ ഭാര്യ എന്നും ഉച്ചതിരിയുമ്പോൾ ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിൽ ജോലിക്കുപോകും. രാവിലെ കുട്ടികളെ സ്കൂളിൽ ഡ്രോപ്പ്‌ ചെയ്യുന്നതും വൈകുന്നേരം പിക്ക്‌ ചെയ്യുന്നതും അയാളുടെ ജോലിയാണ്‌. പാതിരയോടെ നഴ്സിംഗ്‌ ജോലി തീരുന്ന ഭാര്യ താമസിച്ചു മാത്രമേ മിക്കവാറും വീട്ടിൽ വന്നിരുന്നുള്ളു. ഭാര്യയുടെ വരവും കാത്ത്‌ എന്നും അയാൾ ഉറങ്ങാതിരിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. പലപ്പോഴും ടി.വിയുടെ മുന്നിലിരുന്ന്‌ മടുത്ത്‌ ഉറങ്ങിപ്പോയിട്ടുണ്ട്‌.
കുറഞ്ഞൊരുനാളായി മരുന്നുകൾ കഴിച്ച്‌ അയാളും കുട്ടികൾക്കൊപ്പം ഉറങ്ങാൻ പോകും. ഭാര്യ ഒരിക്കലും ആവലാതി പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുമില്ല. അയാൾ താമസിച്ചുള്ള വരവിനേക്കുറിച്ച്‌ ചോദിക്കാറുമില്ല. വർഷത്തിലൊരിക്കൽ കുട്ടികളേയും കൂട്ടി ഭാര്യ വിനോദയാത്ര പോകുമ്പോൾ അയാൾ പൂർവ്വാധികം അനുസരണയുള്ള നായയായി വീടുനോക്കി കഴിയും.

അടുത്തകാലത്തായി ഭാര്യയുടെ ജോലിത്തിരക്ക്‌ കൂടി വന്നുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. നേരം പുലർന്നിട്ടു മാത്രമേ അവൾ വീടെത്താറുള്ളു.
ഒരു സായാഹ്നത്തിൽ പതിവില്ലാതെ കിടക്കമുറിയിലിരുന്ന്‌ അയാൾ കരയുകയുണ്ടായി. വിവാഹഫോട്ടോയിൽ നോക്കി ഏറെ നേരം അയാളിരുന്നു. എന്തിനോ വേണ്ടി കണ്ണുകൾ നിറഞ്ഞുവന്നു. അപ്പോൾ കുട്ടികൾ വെളിയിൽ പന്തു കളിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഭിത്തിയിലേക്ക്‌ ഏറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പന്ത്‌ തന്റെ നേർക്കായുള്ള കല്ലായി അയാൾക്കു തോന്നി. അതിൽ നിന്ന്‌ രക്ഷനേടാൻ അയാൾ പതുങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. കൊച്ചുകുഞ്ഞിനെപ്പോലുള്ള ഈ ഒളിച്ചുകളി ഇനി ഒരിക്കലും സാധ്യമാവില്ലെന്ന്‌ അയാൾക്ക്‌ അറിയാമായിരുന്നു. കൊഴിഞ്ഞുപോയ കുട്ടികാലം ഓർത്ത്‌ മനസ്സു പിടഞ്ഞു. യൗവനത്തിലെ ചൂടുള്ള ദിവസങ്ങളെ അയാൾ സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടു. യൗവനത്തിന്റെ ഓജസും തന്റേടവും പൊയ്പ്പോയെന്ന്‌ അയാൾ വേദനയോടെ വീണ്ടും അറിഞ്ഞു. നെയ്‌ നിറഞ്ഞ ഞരമ്പുകൾ തൊലി പിളർന്ന്‌ തല നീട്ടുന്നതായും ചുറ്റിപ്പിണർന്ന്‌ കഴുത്തു ഞെരിക്കുന്നതായും തോന്നി. തുരുമ്പിച്ച നാഡികളും ഞൊറിവീണ തൊലിയും ചുളിഞ്ഞ്‌ വികൃതമാക്കപ്പെട്ട മുഖവും തന്റേതല്ലെന്ന്‌ അയാൾക്ക്‌ സംശയമുണ്ടായി. വർഷങ്ങളുടെ കുത്തൊഴുക്കിൽ മടവീണ ഒരു ചിറ.

ആ സായാഹ്നത്തിൽ പതിവുകളെ അയാൾ മറന്നു. ഭക്ഷണമോ മരുന്നോ സമയത്തിന്‌ കഴിച്ചില്ല.കറുത്ത മേഘങ്ങൾ ചൂടിയിരുന്ന ആകാശം മഴ പൊഴിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി. ആറു മണിയോടെ കനാലിന്റെ തീരങ്ങൾ കവിഞ്ഞ്‌ മഴവെള്ളം കുത്തിപ്പാഞ്ഞു. മഴയുടെ ആരവം അമർന്നപ്പോൾ നായയെ ലീഷിൽ പിടിച്ച്‌ അയാൾ കനാൽതീരത്തേക്ക്‌ നടന്നു. ഇരുൾ ഭൂമിയെ മൂടിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. അയാളുടെ നടത്തക്ക്‌ പതിവിനെതിരേ വേഗതയായിരുന്നു. മുഖത്തെ മാംസപേശികൾ മുറുകി വന്നു. കുത്തൊഴുക്ക്‌ നോക്കി ചിരിച്ചു. കട്ടികൂടിവരുന്ന ഇരുട്ടിലേക്ക്‌ അയാൾ ആഞ്ഞു നടന്നു. ഏതോ പകപ്പിൽ നായ ലീഷ്‌ തെന്നിച്ച്‌ അയാളെ വീട്ട്‌ ഓടിപ്പോയി. അയാൾ അത്‌ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചതേയില്ല....

The term karma is , according to paul brunton , is a power of the Universal Mind to effect adjustment , to restore equilibrium, and to bring about compensatory balance.

The term karma in its original reference includes mental actions. In the sphere of human conduct the result is that somehow, some where and some when, whatever we do is ultimately reflected back to us. No deed is exhausted in the doing of it;eventually it will bear fruit which will return inexorable to the doer.Karma is a self- moving force. nobody, human or superhuman , has to operate it.

Paul brunton writes: our inner life is fulfilled by rhythms which are under laws as much as tides and dawns areunder laws.
A higher will is dominating human destiny.
Isn;t it?
Brunton makes clear this way,
when a favorable cycle of destiny is operative , a little right action produces a lot of fortunate results. but when an unfavorable cycle is dominant ,a lot of right action produces little result. The person and his or her capacities have not changed but their destiny has. At such a time , the new sequence of events in their life is dictated not by their individual will but by a higher will.

Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time-raoul eshelman

I’d like to talk here about a touching, highly readable novel that is also a fine example of how performatism (my word for post-postmodernism) works in literature. The book I have in mind is Mark Haddon’s novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (London: Vintage, 2004). The novel, which has become a popular classic among both adults and adolescent readers, is typical of performatist literature because it shows how we can experience “impossible” transcendence in everyday terms.

The narrator of Curious Incident is a sixteen-year-old boy with Asperger Syndrome named Christopher Boone. Asperger Syndrome is usually considered either a mild type of autism or something very similar to it. People with the syndrome have a limited ability to feel empathy and often engage in stereotyped or rigid patterns of behavior which make it difficult for them to interact with others socially. Although Asperger patients are typically of normal or above-normal intelligence, their knowledge often cannot be applied practically. The 16-year old Christopher, for example, excels at college-level math and has a vast knowledge of technical and scientific facts. At the same time, though, he is almost unable to do simple things like buy a train ticket or find his way to a nearby railroad station. This is because, as he himself says, he “notices everything” in a rather literal way, and his mind is unable to sort out the flood of new information around him. As with many Asperger patients Christopher also has difficulties dealing with non-literal language and has trouble understanding common slang terms, paradox, poetic metaphors, irony and humor. He also likes to organize his life according to rigid habits and rituals that allow him to shut out disturbing outside influences. When confronted with such disruptive influences he reacts by screaming or moaning and occasionally also by attacking the person he believes is threatening him.

The author, Mark Haddon, worked with Asperger patients, and there is no doubt that the description of his hero has a firm footing in clinical reality. What makes the story interesting is however not simply the way it translates medical facts into an entertaining prose tale. Rather, it is the transformation of this material into a particular scene of the human which enables us as readers to experience transcendence through artificial, aesthetic means. Of particular piquancy in this case is that the teenage narrator in Curious Incident himself explicitly rejects the human, aesthetic and transcendent implications of his own story. Christopher, for example, describes his own mind as a machine, he emphasizes the superiority of logical and statistical reasoning over common sense, he thinks all metaphor is a lie, he is unable to feel collective experience or empathize, he dislikes what he calls “proper novels,” and he explicitly denies the existence of God. The peculiar positive irony of his radically individual, radically rational, and radically anti-aesthetic position is that collectivist, transcendent and aesthetic qualities are restored and redeemed in the course of his own story in spite of the narrator’s own intent. The curious result of the book is that a character who denies the existence of aesthetically mediated transcendence himself accomplishes that transcendence and practically forces us to identify ourselves with it as we read his story.

The plot of the story may be summarized briefly as follows. Christopher Boone, the teenage narrator, who is living with his father after his mother’s death, finds the neighbor’s dog Wellington stabbed to death with a pitchfork and decides to find the solution to the crime in the manner of Sherlock Holmes. Because he has great difficulties interacting with others socially, Christopher’s detective work creates embarrassing situations for his father, who had been having an affair with the dog-owning neighbor, Mrs. Shears. After the father confiscates Christopher’s diary in which he has been collecting evidence on the murder, Christopher discovers letters from his mother revealing that she had in fact never died but was living in London with Mr. Shears. As it turns out, it was the father who hid the letters after his wife left and killed the dog after his relationship with Mrs. Shears went sour. Having lost all trust in his father, Christopher decides to travel to London to live with his mother. This short journey by train is made very difficult because of his inability to interact with others as well as because of his overwhelming fear of strange situations and people. Through ingenuity, willpower and some luck Christopher eventually makes it to his mother’s place in London. There, his surprise appearance creates difficulties which lead his mother to break up with Mr. Shears. Christopher and his mother then return to his hometown of Swindon, where Christopher gradually begins to reconcile with his father. The book ends not with any emotional resolution or particular twist of plot, but with Christopher taking and excelling in his college-entrance math exams. Rather than closing with a conventional epilogue, the book ends by presenting the formal solution of one of Christopher’s favorite math problems.

Christopher Boone is an excellent example of what I call an opaque performatist hero. These types of hero (and heroine) are locked into a state of being that gives them a whole, closed identity but at the same time makes it difficult for them to communicate with others. The “performance” in performatism consists in overcoming precisely this separation from others, of bridging the gap between one’s own, closed self and others.

Christopher’s way of thinking is, first of all, assumes that there is a direct relationship between signs and things: he wants words to refer to things exactly. In addition, Christopher is a proponent of Occam’s razor, which suggests that we reduce all arguments to nothing more than their most necessary parts. The problem is that Christopher not only blocks off what he considers to be “unnecessary” metaphorical meaning, but also all forms of paradox that are unavoidable in normal language use. Thus Christopher can separate the different levels of reference contained in the humorous sentence “his face was drawn but the curtains were real,” but he cannot enjoy their paradoxical effect in the form of a pun or joke. This inability to think paradoxically also applies to discourse itself: “it is like three people trying to talk to you at the same time about different things.” (CI, p. 10) Christopher’s peculiar type of rationality is able to function only by shutting out the discourse of other people.

Another unusual thing about Christopher is that he can’t tell lies. The reason for this however has less to do with a natural love of truth than with an inability to come to terms with what philosophers call contingency, or reflection on what might otherwise have been possible in a particular case: “A lie is when you say something happened which didn’t happen. But there is only ever one thing which happened at a particular time and a particular place. And there are an infinite number of things which didn’t happen at that time and that place. And if I think about something which didn’t happen I start thinking about all the other things which didn’t happen.” (24) Christopher is, however, able to tell “white lies,” which involve telling the truth only partially. These allow him to undercut his father’s ban on doing detective work and escape capture by the police on his way to his mother’s house.

Christopher’s purely rational and analytical type of reasoning also rules out any belief in transcendence. This can be seen in his explicit rejection of his own name. At one point he notes that in Greek Christopher means “carrying Christ” and that the name was given to St. Christopher for carrying Christ across a river. He then adds: “My mother used to say that it meant Christopher was a nice name because it was a story about being kind and helpful, but I do not want my name to mean a story about being kind and helpful. I want my name to mean me.” (CI, p. 20) In rejecting the higher meaning of his name, Christopher denies the originary scene associated with it, which involved both a transcendent being and a social act of helping someone else.

Another peculiarity of Christopher’s thinking is that he is unable to identify and imitate other people’s gestures. Although he is able to distinguish positive and negative smileys, he is unable to identify and react to more nuanced pictograms and, by extension, to more complex human faces and emotions. This leads to a radical separation from others, since a person unable to “read” other people’s gestures and emotions will hardly be able to respond to them in a satisfying way. Christopher, indeed, is afraid of other people and often does not look at them when he talks to them.

Elsewhere I have defined performatism as being based on a “lock” between an inner and outer frame. Performatist characters are more often than not trapped in inner frames, which give them a whole, but closed-off identity. Although this gives them a sure sense of identity it also makes it difficult for them to form productive relationships with other people. In this case, the inner frame may be thought of as the Asberger Syndrome itself. The syndrome produces countless situations in which the hero maintains his identity but shuts out “unnecessary” things like paradox, chance, metaphor, irony and the like. Asperger Syndrome, in effect, is an unchanging trap producing dysfunctional scenes which the narrator has no way of overcoming on his own.

The outer frame, for its part, may be thought of as the work itself, which in this case throws the narrator’s dysfunctionality back onto him with full force. Christopher’s at first purely “logical” search for the cause of the dog’s death causes him to become radically separated from his father and forces him to engage in a (successful) quest for his mother. In this regard the inner frame and the outer frame work together to produce a positive unity or whole. This unity is however experienced differently by Christopher and by us as readers: he grasps it literally and we metaphorically. Whereas Christopher sees himself as achieving something quite practical and concrete, we see him as becoming Christ-like, as fulfilling the originary promise contained in his name—although in an unexpected, unusual way.

Just how this works can be seen in a crucial scene where Christopher is taking his A level math exams. During the test the proctor, a Rev. Peters, reads a book by the German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer called The Cost of Discipleship (New York: Touchstone 1995, orig. 1937), a fact which is mentioned twice in the chapter. In the original German, Bonhoeffer’s book is called Nachfolge, or literally “following after.” In form and meaning this is very close to the German word for imitation (Nachahmung), emphasizing that discipleship may be seen as a kind of mimesis or imitation of Christ. One of Bonhoeffer’s main theses is that the call of Christ results in a radical separation from others: “Christ wants to make man lonely, man should not see anything except Him who called him.” (Discipleship, p. 94, my translation) And: “Christ freed men from their immediacy with the world, and brought them into immediacy with himself.” (Discipleship, pp. 94-95) The major difference here is that Christ himself inserts himself as mediator “not only between God and man, but also between man and man, between man and reality.” (Discipleship, p. 95) Obviously, this mediating relationship is lacking in the case of Christopher. This is not just because of his rationally motivated atheism, but because Asberger Syndrome prevents him from accepting any mediation whatsoever.

Viewed against this background, Christopher is someone who is able to imitate only himself. However, by imitating or “following” his own peculiar type of separated logic he manages to change his life for the better by forcing his parents to deal with him truthfully. Put another way, he forces them to deal with him on his own terms, which demand a one-to-one relationship between signs and things. In this regard Christopher can truly be said to “carry himself,” since he manages to transcend a situation in which he is trapped without resorting to a mediator or entering into discourse with others. Indeed, like Christ, he comes to act a mediator for others, in this case his parents.

Moreover, within the limited confines of his own consciousness Christopher comes to feel that he is all powerful. Here are his last words in the main section of the book: “And I know I can do this [become a scientist] because I went to London on my own, and because I solved the mystery of Who Killed Wellington? and I found my mother and I was brave and I wrote a book and that means I can do anything.” (CI, p. 268) Christopher, though not developing psychologically in any way, has become deified; he becomes a kind of social god, in the sense that he can now “do anything.” Christopher, however, needs us, the readers, to realize this deification in full. We, in turn, need Christopher’s whole, self-contained and self-confirming person to provide a unified, stable center which we can “follow after” and in doing so experience transcendence vicariously. Christopher, in short, acts as a dysfunctional Christ figure and we as his disciples.

One of the nicer ironies of the book is that it doesn’t end with us on top, but rather tries to turn the narrator-reader relationship upside down once more in favor of the hyper-rational Christopher. The books ends, as already mentioned, with an advanced math problem whose solution appears to me (and certainly to many other readers) as an act of utter impossibility. Once more, we are challenged to forego our own common sense—with the emphasis on “common”—and place our trust in Christopher’s peculiar type of unmediated, isolated and, indeed, potentially divine rationality.

കോളേജ്‌ പഠനകാലം കഴിഞ്ഞ്‌ അനുഭവിക്കേണ്ടി വന്ന ഒരു നരകം പിടിച്ച
ഇടവേളയിലാണ്‌ ഞാന്‍ ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്കിയെ പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നത്‌. ഒരു ദിവസം
സന്ധ്യക്ക്‌ ഞാന്‍ വീട്ടുപടിക്കല്‍ വെറുതെ നില്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അതിലേ
കടന്നുപോയ ഷണ്‍മുഖന്‍റെ കയ്യില്‍ നിന്നാണ്‌ "നിന്ദിതരും പീഡിതരും"
എനിക്ക്‌ കിട്ടിയത്‌. തിരിഞ്ഞുനോക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആ നിമിഷം വിധിയുടെ സവിശേഷ
മുദ്ര പതിഞ്ഞതായിരുന്നുവെന്ന്‌ ഞാന്‍ കാണുന്നു. ഷണ്‍മുഖന്‍ സ്കൂളില്‍
എന്നോടൊപ്പം പഠിച്ചിരുന്നു. ആ സമയം അവന്‍ ഒരു ട്യൂഷന്‍
മാസ്റ്ററായിരുന്നു. അവന്‌ ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയെപ്പറ്റി ഒന്നുമറിയില്ല.
ലൈബ്രറിയില്‍ നിന്നും ഒരു പുസ്തകമെടുത്തു. -അത്‌
ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയുടേതായിപ്പോയി, അത്രമാത്രം.

ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്കിയുടെ ഒരു കൃതി ആദ്യമായി ഒരുവന്‍ വായിക്കുന്നുവെങ്കില്‍ അത്‌
നിന്ദിതരും പീഡിതരുമായിരിക്കണം. പോരാ, അയാള്‍ യുവാവുകൂടിയായിരിക്കണം.
എന്ന്‌ സ്റ്റീഫന്‍ സ്വെയ്ഗ്‌ പറഞ്ഞത്‌ പിന്നീടാണ്‌ ഞാനറിഞ്ഞത്‌.
നിന്ദിതരും പീഡിതരും എന്നെ ആഴത്തില്‍ ഇളക്കിമറിച്ചു. അത്രമേല്‍ എന്‍റെ
ആത്മാവെ സ്പര്‍ശിച്ച ഒരു കൃതി അതിനു മുന്‍പു ഞാന്‍ വായിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല.
വായിക്കുന്നതോടെ അത്‌ തീര്‍ന്നുപോകുമല്ലോ എന്ന ചിന്ത എന്നെ
വേദനിപ്പിച്ചു. ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയിലേക്ക്‌ എനിക്കുള്ള ചൂണ്ടുപലകയായിരുന്നു
ആ പുസ്തകം.

അതോടെ ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയന്‍ കൃതികള്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ വായിക്കുക ,
ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയെക്കുറിച്ച്‌ ആവുന്നത്ര അറിയുക എന്നീ മോഹങ്ങള്‍ എന്നെ
വേട്ടയാടാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ഞാന്‍ ആ വഴിക്ക്‌ അന്വേഷണങ്ങള്‍ ആരംഭിക്കുകയും
ചെയ്തു. എറണാംകുളം നാഷണല്‍ബുക്സ്റ്റാളിന്‍റെ ഇരുളടഞ്ഞ ഗോഡൌണില്‍ എന്നെ
കാത്ത്‌" ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കി കലയും ജീവിതവും" എന്ന ജി.എന്‍.പണിക്കരുടെ
പഠനഗ്രന്ഥം പൊടി പിടിച്ച്‌ കിടന്നിരുന്നു. അവിടെ അവശേഷിച്ചിരുന്ന
ഏകകോപ്പി . അത്‌ ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയെക്കുറിച്ച്‌ എനിക്ക്‌ ഒരു സമഗ്രചിത്രം
തന്നു. പിന്നീട്‌ കെ. സുരേന്ദ്രന്‍റെ ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയുടെ കഥയും. ഈ
ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങള്‍ രചിക്കുവാന്‍ ആധാരമായിത്തീര്‍ന്ന അടിസ്ഥാനഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങള്‍
പില്‍ക്കാലത്ത്‌ എനിക്ക്‌ ലഭിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.

മലയാളത്തില്‍ നാല്‍പ്പതുകളില്‍ത്തന്നെ ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കി അവതരിച്ചിരുന്നു.
"ഇഡിയറ്റ്‌" ഇടപ്പള്ളി കരുണാകരമേനോനും "കരമസോവ്‌ സഹോദരര്‍" കെ.എന്‍
ദാമോദരനും ഭാഷാന്തരം ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. അതിനു ശേഷം എല്ലാക്കാലത്തും
ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിക്ക്‌ മലയാളത്തില്‍ അര്‍പ്പിതാരാധകരുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്

‌- ഒരു
ന്യൂനപക്ഷമാണെങ്കിലും

.ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയെ വായിക്കുന്നതോടൊപ്പം ഭാഷാന്തരം ചെയ്യേണ്ടതിന്‍റെയും
ആവശ്യകത എനിക്കു ബോധ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ചൂതാട്ടക്കാരനാണ്‌ ആദ്യം ചെയ്തത്‌
തുടര്‍ന്ന്‌ ഒരപഹാസ്യന്‍റെ സ്വപ്നം, സൌമ്യാത്മാവ്‌ ,ഒന്‍പതു കത്തുകളിലൂടെ
ഒരു നോവല്‍ കാരണവരുടെ കിനാവ്‌`, അപരം ,അപക്വയുവാവ്‌ ,ക്ഷണിക്കപ്പെടാതെ ,
എന്നെന്നേക്കുമായി ഒരു ഭര്‍ത്താവ്‌ ,അധോതലക്കുറിപ്പുകള്‍ ,എന്നീ
നോവലുകളും കര്‍ഷകനായ മരിയ സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗീയമായ ഒരു ക്രിസ്‌മസ്‌പ്പൂമരം എന്നീ
കഥകളും ഞാന്‍ വിവര്‍ത്തനം ചെയ്തു. വിവര്‍ത്തന പ്രക്രിയക്കിടെ എന്നെ
ഉന്‍മാദത്തിന്‍റെ വക്കിലൂടെ നടത്തിച്ചത്‌ "എന്നെന്നേക്കുമായൊരു
ഭര്‍ത്താവാണ്‌." ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയുടെ പത്നിയുടെ ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍ അന്നയുടെ
ഓര്‍മ്മകളാക്കി ഞാന്‍ പുറത്തിറക്കി. ഇഡിയറ്റാണ്‌ എന്‍റെ ആത്മാവുമായി
ഏറ്റവും അടുത്തു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന കൃതി. ഞാന്‍ അത്‌ ആവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു
വായിക്കുന്നു. ആനന്ദം കൊള്ളുന്നു. ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയന്‍ കൃതികളില്‍ എന്നെ
മടുപ്പിച്ച ഒരു രചനയുണ്ട്‌.-"ഭൂതാവിഷ്‌ടര്‍".

വേദാന്തത്തിന്‍റെ ആഴങ്ങളിലേക്ക്‌ സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോഴും എനിക്ക്‌
ദസ്തയവ്‌സ്ക്കിയെ കൈവെടിയാനാകുന്നില്ല. മണ്ണിന്‍റെ വേദന അനുഭവിച്ചതിനു
ശേഷമേ വിണ്ണില്‍ പാര്‍ക്കാനാകു.- അതാണ്‌ കൂടുതല്‍ അഭികാമ്യവും സുഖകരവും
'നിന്ദിതരും പീഡിതരും' എനിക്കു തന്ന ഷണ്‍മുഖന്‍ഈയിടെ ഒരു വാഹനം
വന്നിടിച്ചു മരിച്ചു. എല്ലാം മായാവിനോദന്‍റെ കല്‍പ്പനകള്‍, '

Explaining god in terms of consciousness means explaining god in a scientific way, or a spiritually scientific way.
The religious way of explaining god is unscientific .
Spirituality is scientific and we have to keep it away from the invisible talons of religions.

Here again the point is become the witness and in order to become the witness the
basic requirement is an element of detachment .Do not confuse this detachment
as being indifference or lack of love.
If the detachment is right it will give insight to the realization that , we have
been displaying on the banner of love but simply tricks of the mind wanting
to meet our private and social needs.

Real love is something that should emerge after the transformation enables
the enhancement of our love in many ways and finally we reach a state in which we are able
to love the whole world.
This means that we cannot afford hostility .
There is a specific moment in all our lives in which we cannot indulge hostility .
No matter how profound our hostilities are, they should not stay put if
we are to die during this present passing moment .
Documented real near- death experience can vouch for it.
The near-death experience cannot afford hostility for the simple reason
that it is not an ordinary state of consciousness ; it is higher state ,beyond body, mind, and ego.
All minor and major hostilities evaporate there.
If you are still cynical about this state, you can do an experiment yourself
you need not go to a laboratory in order to do this simple experiment .
Right now ,simply imagine and feel that this is your last moment and that you are going to die.

സ്വാഭാവികവികാസമായി ഇന്ത്യന്‍ നവോത്ഥാനപ്രസ്ഥാനത്തെ വീക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ആ കാഴ്ചപ്പാട്,
ആംഗലവിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും കൊളോണി യല്‍ ഭരണസ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും നവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ
ഊര്‍ജ്ജപ്രഭവങ്ങളാണെന്നും കരുതുന്നു. കേരളീയ നവോത്ഥാനത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് പില്ക്കാലത്തുണ്ടായ
അക്കാദമി പഠനങ്ങള്‍ ആംഗലവിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും കൊളോണിയല്‍ വാഴ്ചയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പരിവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളുടെ
വാഹകര്‍ എന്ന നിലയില്‍ ക്രൈസ്തവ മിഷണറിമാരെ കാണുകയും, മിഷണറിമാര്‍ നവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ
ചാലകശക്തിയായി രുന്നുവെന്ന് നിരീക്ഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

നവോത്ഥാനത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനങ്ങള്‍ അടിസ്ഥാനമായി സ്വീകരിച്ചത് മുഖ്യമായും രണ്ട് സങ്കല്പനങ്ങളാണ്.
ഒന്ന്.സാഹിത്യത്തില്‍ പ്രതിഫലിച്ചു കാണുന്ന നൂതനപ്രവണതകള്‍ നവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ഫലമാണ്.
നവോത്ഥാനം സാമൂഹികമായ ഒരു പ്രക്രിയയാണെങ്കിലും അത് സാഹിത്യത്തെ ആധാരമാക്കി പഠിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്.
രണ്ട്. പാശ്ചാത്യസ്വാധീനമാണ് നവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ പ്രകടമായ ഹേതു. കൊളോണിയല്‍വാഴ്ചയുടെ
ഭാഗമായി നിലവില്‍ വന്ന പുതിയ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും ക്രൈസ്തവമിഷണറിമാരുടെ
`സംഭാവന'കളുമാണ് നവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ചാലകശക്തി.

കേരളീയ നവോത്ഥാനത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള നേരത്തെ പറഞ്ഞ പഠനങ്ങളെല്ലാം ആ മുന്‍വിധികള്‍ പങ്കിടുന്നുണ്ട്.
എന്നാല്‍ ഇതില്‍ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ അറിവുകളാണ് പത്തൊമ്പതാം
ശതകത്തില്‍ കേരളത്തിലെ കീഴാളസമൂഹവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ചരിത്രവസ്തുതകള്‍ വെളിവാക്കുന്നത്.
തെക്കന്‍ തിരുവിതാംകൂറില്‍ സവര്‍ണ്ണരും അവര്‍ണ്ണരും തമ്മില്‍ നിരന്തരം
ഉണ്ടായിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന കായികമായ ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലുകള്‍ക്ക് അറുതിവരുത്തുവാനായി തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍
രാജാവ് സ്തംഭലിഖിതം എന്നപേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു വിളംബരം പുറത്തിറക്കിയിരുന്നു.
ഇന്നത്തെ കന്യാകുമാരി ജില്ലയിലാണ് ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലുകള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്.
ലിഖിതം സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടതും അവിടെത്തന്നെ. കന്യാകുമാരി ജില്ലയിലെ ചാന്നാര്‍
സമൂഹത്തില്‍ നിന്നും ഉയര്‍ന്നുവന്ന വൈകുണ്ഠസ്വാമി എന്ന ആത്മീയാചാര്യനെക്കറിച്ച്
എം.എസ്.എസ്.പാണ്ഡ്യന്‍ നടത്തിയ പഠനങ്ങളും നേരത്തെ പറഞ്ഞ മുന്‍വിധികള്‍
വിമര്‍ശനവിധേയമാക്കാന്‍ നമ്മെ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതു പോലെ പ്രസക്തമായ മറ്റൊരു
വസ്തുത, പാണ്ടിപ്പറയ സമുദായാംഗമായ തൈക്കാട്ട് അയ്യാവുസ്വാമികളായിരുന്നു ശ്രീനാരായണഗുരുവിന്റേയും
ചട്ടമ്പിസ്വാമികളുടേയും ഗുരുവെന്നതാണ്. കുമാരനാശാന്റെ വാക്കുകള്‍ കടമെടുത്ത് പറയുകയാണെങ്കില്‍
ദൂഷ്ടിയില്‍ പ്പെട്ടാലും ദോഷമുള്ളോരായിരുന്ന ഒരു ജനതയുടെ ഇടയില്‍ പത്തൊമ്പതാം ശതകത്തിന്റെ
പ്രാരംഭഘട്ടത്തില്‍ ശക്തിപ്രാപിച്ച വിമോചനതൃഷ്ണയിലും സ്വത്വസ്ഥാപനശ്രമങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നുമാണ്
കേരളീയനവോത്ഥാനം ഉദയം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. സാമുദായികജീവിതത്തിന്റെ കീഴ്ത്തട്ടില്‍ നിന്നും മുകളിലേക്കു
വ്യാപിച്ച ഒരു പ്രവാഹഗതിയാണ് കേരളീയനവോത്ഥാനത്തിന് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്.
ബംഗാളില്‍ രാജാറാം മോഹന്‍റായിയുടേയും കേശബ് ചന്ദ്രസെന്നിന്റേയും പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍
ഒരു ന്യൂനപക്ഷത്തെ അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നപ്പോഴാണ് ഇക്കാര്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് തികച്ചും
കേരളത്തിലെ നിരക്ഷരസമൂഹം സ്വത്വസ്ഥാപനത്തിന്നായി കര്‍മ്മനിരതരായത്. ആ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനത്തില്‍
ചാലകശക്തി എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള ദൗത്യം ക്രൈസ്തവമിഷനറിമാര്‍ക്ക് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. എന്നുമാത്രമല്ല,
കീഴാളസമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ആ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം ക്രൈസ്തവമിഷനറിമാര്‍ക്ക് എതിരായിരുന്നുവെന്ന്
എം.എസ്.എസ്.പാണ്ഡ്യന്‍ വൈകുണ്ഠ സ്വാമിയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനത്തില്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
സവര്‍ണ്ണജനസമൂഹത്തില്‍ നടന്ന പരിഷ്കരണപരിശ്രമങ്ങളായി
കേരളീയ നവോത്ഥാനത്തെ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുവാനുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങള്‍ തികച്ചും
യാന്ത്രികമായി വാര്‍പ്പുമാതൃകകളെ പിന്തുടരുകയാണ് ചെയ്തത്. അക്കാരണത്താല്‍,
കേരളീയര്‍ക്ക് മുന്‍കൈ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സര്‍ക്കസ്സിനെ, നവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ
ചരിത്രസന്ധിയില്‍ രൂപംകൊണ്ട സാംസ്കാരികാവിഷ്കാരമാണ് അതെന്നു തിരിച്ചറിയുവാനോ
വിലയിരുത്തുവാനോ നമ്മുടെ പഠനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് സാധിക്കാതെ പോയി. ഉത്തരേന്ത്യയിലെ
സവര്‍ണ്ണഭൂവുടമകള്‍ക്കിടയിലുണ്ടായ പരിഷ്കരണപ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ അളവുകോലില്‍
വിലയിരുത്തുന്ന രീതി ഇന്നും തുടരുന്നതിനാലാണ് ദലിത്- ആദിവാസി സമൂഹങ്ങളുടെ
സ്വത്വസ്ഥാപനത്തിനു വേണ്ടി നടക്കുന്ന പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ പ്രാന്തവല്ക്കരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.
നവോത്ഥാനത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അക്കാദമി വ്യവഹാരങ്ങളാണ് കേരളീയരുടെ പൊതുബോധത്തെ
നിര്‍ണ്ണയിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഇന്നും നിലയുറപ്പിച്ച് നില്ക്കുന്നത്.

മഹാരാഷ്ട്രയിലെ കുരുന്ദ്‌വാഡ് രാജാവിന്റെ അശ്വാലയം സൂക്ഷിപ്പുകാരനായിരുന്ന
വിഷ്ണപന്ത് ഛത്രെയാണ് ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സര്‍ക്കസ്സിന്റെ പിതാവ്.
ഇറ്റലിയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ പര്യടനത്തിനെത്തിയ ചിരിനീസ് സര്‍ക്കസ്സിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥന്‍
തന്റെ അഭ്യാസപ്രകടനങ്ങള്‍ ഏതൊരു ഇന്ത്യാക്കാരനും അസാധ്യമാണെന്നു പറയുകയും
വെല്ലുവിളിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഛത്രെ ആ വെല്ലുവിളി ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയും ഒരു വര്‍ഷത്തിനകം
ചിരിനീസ് സര്‍ക്കസ്സിന്റെ അഭിമാനമായിരുന്ന അശ്വാഭ്യാസങ്ങള്‍ പരിശീലിക്കുകയും
അവതരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നാണ് ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സര്‍ക്കസ്സിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ചരിത്രം.
ഛത്രെയുടെ പ്രകടനം നടക്കുന്നത് 1880 മാര്‍ച്ച് 20 നായിരുന്നു. ഛത്രെ പിന്നീട് ഒരു സര്‍ക്കസ്സ്
കമ്പനിയുണ്ടാക്കി ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ പര്യടനം നടത്തി.കീലേരി കുഞ്ഞിക്കണ്ണന്‍ടീച്ചര്‍ ആ സര്‍ക്കസ്സ് പ്രകടനം
കണ്ടുവെന്നും അതിലെ അഭ്യാസങ്ങള്‍ സ്വയം പരിശീലിച്ചെന്നും രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിക്കാണുന്നു.
കീലേരിയുടെ ശിഷ്യന്മാരായ കാരായി കൃഷ്ണന്‍ ടീച്ചര്‍, പരയാലി കണ്ണന്‍ടീച്ചര്‍,
കീഴന്തി ഗോപാലന്‍ടീച്ചര്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ സര്‍ക്കസ്സ് അഭ്യാസങ്ങള്‍ പരിശീലിക്കുകയും
പരിശീലിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇവരിലൂടെയും ഇവരുടെ ശിഷ്യപരമ്പരയിലൂടെയുമാണ്
ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സര്‍ക്കസ്സ് മലയാളികളുടെ കുത്തകയായിത്തീര്‍ന്നത്. ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ ആദ്യമായി
സര്‍ക്കസ്സ് പരിശീലനത്തിനായി ഒരു സ്ഥിരം കളരി സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് 1901 ല്‍ തലശ്ശേരിയിലാണ്.
കീലേരി കുഞ്ഞിക്കണ്ണന്‍ടീച്ചറായിരുന്നു അതിന്റെ സ്ഥാപകന്‍. പിന്നീട് എം.കെ.രാമന്‍ ടീച്ചറായി അതിന്റെ സാരഥി.

ഛത്രെയുടെ സര്‍ക്കസ്സ്പര്യടനം കേരളത്തില്‍ ഉണര്‍ത്തിയതുപോലെ ഒരു താല്പര്യം മറ്റു പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍
ഉണര്‍ത്തിയതായി കാണുന്നില്ല. തലശ്ശേരിയില്‍ കീലേരിയും ശിഷ്യന്മാരും സര്‍ക്കസ്സില്‍ ആസക്തരാവുകയും
സര്‍ക്കസ്സ് അഭ്യാസികള്‍ എന്ന നിലയില്‍ സ്വയം പരിശീലനം നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. അവരും ശിഷ്യന്മാരും
തൊഴില്‍ എന്ന നിലയില്‍ സര്‍ക്കസ്സ് സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ഒരു തൊഴില്‍മേഖല എന്ന നിലയില്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ
ശിഷ്യരെ സര്‍ക്കസ്സിലേക്കു നയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. കേരളത്തിലെ കളരിസമ്പ്രദായവും ആയോധന
മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് സര്‍ക്കസ്സിനോട് രൂപപ്പെട്ട തല്പര്യത്തിന്റെ ഹേതുവായി പൊതുവേ പറയാറ്.
എന്നാല്‍ കേരളത്തിലേതിന് സമാനവും നമ്മുടേതിനേക്കാള്‍ വൈചിത്ര്യപൂര്‍ണ്ണവുമായ
ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ മറ്റു പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ ഇന്നും നിലവിലുണ്ട്. എന്നിരിക്കെ മലയാളികള്‍ക്കു സവിശേഷമായി
സര്‍ക്കസ്സില്‍ താല്പര്യമുണരുവാന്‍ കാരണമെന്ത് എന്ന ചോദ്യവും അന്വേഷണ വിഷയമാണ്.

സര്‍ക്കസ്സും സംസ്കാരവും (Circus and Culture,Indiana University)എന്ന
തന്റെ കൃതിയില്‍ ചിഹ്നവിജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെ ഉപദര്‍ശനങ്ങളുടെ വെളിച്ചത്തില്‍
നിഷ്കൃഷ്ടമായ സാംസ്കാരികവ്യവഹാരങ്ങളാണ് സര്‍ക്കസ്സ് എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സര്‍ക്കസ്സിനെ മുന്‍നിര്‍ത്തി അദ്ദേഹം നടത്തിയ പഠനങ്ങളില്‍ പങ്കാളിയാകുവാനുള്ള
അവസരം ലേഖകന് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. മിത്തിന്റേയും ഇന്ത്യന്‍ കോറിയോഗ്രാഫിയുടേയും
സ്വാധീനം ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സര്‍ക്കസ്സില്‍ എപ്രകാരമാണ് പ്രകടമാകുന്നതെന്ന ഒരു പഠനം

സ്വത്വം ശരീരനിരപേക്ഷമായ ഒരു സംപ്രത്യയമല്ല. കായികാഭ്യാസങ്ങളും ആയോധനകലകളും
ശാരീരികതയില്‍ ഊന്നിനില്ക്കുന്ന കലാവിഷ്കാരങ്ങളാണ്.
പഴയ സാമൂഹികാവസ്ഥയില്‍ സ്വത്വാവിഷ്കരണമെന്ന നിലയിലല്ലാതെ
വ്യവസ്ഥാപിതമായ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളെ സേവിക്കുകയാണ് ശരീരനിഷ്ഠമായ
കലകള്‍ ചെയ്തിരുന്നത്. ഇന്നും കളരി ആധുനികതയുടെ

കാരണം ഇതില്‍ നിന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കാം .

ശരീരത്തെ സ്വത്വാവിഷ്കരണത്തിനുള്ള ഉപാധിയെന്ന നിലയില്‍ പരിവര്‍ത്തിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ്

പരിസരങ്ങളിലുമുള്ള കീഴാളജനവിഭാഗത്തിന് ഇത് വിമോചനമാര്‍ഗ്ഗം കൂടി ആയിരുന്നു.
ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ മറ്റു പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ സമാനമായ ശാരീരികകലകള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും
അവിടെ ആര്‍ക്കും കീലേരിക്ക് സാധ്യമായ സാഹസികത നിറഞ്ഞതും ഉള്‍ക്കാഴ്ചയുടെ
പ്രകാശത്താല്‍ നയിക്കപ്പെട്ടതുമായ ഇത്തരം ദൗത്യം ഏറ്റെടുക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ പോയി.
ഇതിനു കാരണം സാമൂഹികശാസ്ത്രപരമാണ്. അത് കേരളീയനവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ
ഉള്ളടക്കവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. കേളപ്പജി പുനരുജ്ജീവിപ്പിച്ച
കളരിയില്‍ നിന്ന് സര്‍ക്കസ്സിന് ഒരു നേട്ടവും ഉണ്ടായില്ല. പില്‍ക്കാലത്ത് ഇത്തരം
ആയോധനകലാപൈതൃകം തികച്ചും പ്രതിലോമപരമായ ഉള്ളടക്കത്തോടെയാണ്
ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ടത് എന്ന് നമ്മുക്കറിയാം.

ദേശീയത, സ്വത്വം, ശരീരം എന്നിവ ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളുന്ന സവിശേഷമായ
ഒരു പ്രശ്‌നപരിസരമാണ് കീലേരി കുഞ്ഞിക്കണ്ണന്‍ടീച്ചര്‍ പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്നത്

ആധുനികതയുടെ കാലഘട്ടം സാഹിത്യത്തില്‍ ഇപ്രകാരം അതിഭാവുകത്വത്തോടെ
അസംബന്ധതയുമായി സംബന്ധത്തിലേര്‍പ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ അതില്‍നിന്നും

ചെയ്തവരാണ് സര്‍ക്കസ്സിലെ കലാകാരന്മാരും കലാകാരികളും.
നോവല്‍, ചെറുകഥ, നാടകം എന്നിവപോലെ സര്‍ക്കസ്സും
പാശ്ചാത്യമാതൃകയുടെ സ്വദേശീയമായ രൂപത്തെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുവാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
മിത്തോ-കോറിയോഗ്രഫി സ്ട്രചേഴ്‌സ് ഇന്‍ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സര്‍ക്കസ്സ്
എന്ന പ്രബന്ധത്തില്‍ പോള്‍ ബൂയ്‌സാക്ക് ആവസ്തുത വെളിവാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
സര്‍ക്കസ്സ് അടിസ്ഥാനപരമായി പാശ്ചാത്യമാണെങ്കിലും
അത് നമ്മുടെ കലാവിഷ്കാരത്തിനുള്ള സമര്‍ത്ഥമായ രൂപമാക്കി നാം വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ കീഴ്ത്തട്ടില്‍ നിന്നും മുകളിലേക്കായിരുന്നു കേരളത്തില്‍ നവോത്ഥാനപ്രവണതയുടെ
പ്രവാഹഗതി എന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നതിന്നു പകരം ഒരു പാന്‍-ഇന്ത്യന്‍ വാര്‍പ്പുമാതൃക പിന്തുടരാനാണ്
നമ്മുടെ നവോത്ഥാനപഠനങ്ങള്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചത്. സാഹിത്യചര്‍ച്ചയില്‍ നവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റേയും
ദേശീയതയുടേയും ഉറവുകള്‍ തിരയുമ്പോള്‍ അടുക്കളയില്‍ നിന്ന് അരങ്ങത്തേക്കും
നമ്പൂതിരിയെ മനുഷ്യനാക്കലിലും നമ്മുടെ ചിന്തയെ തളച്ചിട്ടു. കേരളീയനവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ
ധാരയില്‍ ഏറ്റവും ഒടുവില്‍ മാത്രം കടന്നു വന്നവര്‍ അതിന്റെ
കേന്ദ്രമാകുന്ന വിധത്തില്‍ വിന്യസിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു വ്യവഹാരമാക്കി നവോത്ഥാനപഠനത്തെ
മാറ്റിത്തീര്‍ക്കുന്നതില്‍ നിര്‍ണ്ണായകമായ പങ്ക് സാഹിത്യാധിഷ്ഠിതപഠനങ്ങള്‍ക്കുണ്ട്.
ഭാവുകത്വപരമായി മലയാളസാഹിത്യത്തില്‍ പ്രകടമായ കാലുഷ്യങ്ങള്‍
ആധുനികതയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള നമ്മുടെ അവബോധത്തില്‍ സ്വാധീനം ചെലുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
മലയാളത്തിലെ നോവല്‍-ചെറുകഥാസാഹിത്യങ്ങള്‍ ജീവിതയാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യത്തെ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുകയും

നായകത്വം വഹിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഒരേ സമയം വ്യത്യസ്തവും വിരുദ്ധവുമായ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടുകള്‍
കൊണ്ടുനടക്കുവാനുള്ള നമ്മുടെ സഹജമായ സിദ്ധിയുടെ ഒരു ഉദാഹരണമാണിത്.
ആധുനികത അതിന്റെ വികാസഗതിയില്‍ ഒടുവില്‍ ദാര്‍ശനികനമായി അസ്തിത്വവാദത്തില്‍

അനന്തമായ പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിൽ മനുഷ്യൻ ധിഷണാശക്തിയുടെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സ്രോതസ്സായി വിരാജിക്കുന്നു. കൂട്ടിന്‌ ഗുരുത്വാകർഷണംപോലുമില്ലാത്ത നിശ്ശൂന്യമണ്ഡലങ്ങളിൽ പരീക്ഷണ ആശ്രമങ്ങൾ സ്ഥാപിച്ച്‌ പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ ഭ്രമണം നിയന്ത്രിക്കാൻ സാഹസികതയുടെ ചിറകിൽ പറക്കുകയാണവൻ. ഒരു കാലത്ത്‌ അവനെ വിസ്മയിപ്പിച്ച പ്രകൃതി എന്ന അവന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണപാത്രം ഒരു സർവ്വശക്തനായ സ്രഷ്ടാവിന്റെ വരുതിക്കുള്ളിലാണെന്നവൻ ധരിച്ച്‌ സമാധാനിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ അവന്റെ പ്രജ്ഞാവ്യാപാരങ്ങളിലെ ശാസ്ത്രീയസമീപനം ദൈവസങ്കൽപത്തെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യാൻ അവനെ പ്രാപ്തനാക്കി. ഈ പ്രാപ്തി കൈവരിക്കുവാൻ കാലതാമസമെടുത്തു. സുദീർഘമായ ആ കാലവിളംബത്തിനിടയിൽ ദൈവാശ്രയബോധം അവനിൽ ആഴത്തിൽ പടർന്നു. അത്‌ അവന്റെ സ്ഥായീഭാവമായി മാറി. അവൻ ദൈവത്തിന്‌ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും ആസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും ചമച്ചു. അവയ്ക്ക്‌ നേതാക്കന്മാരും നേതാക്കന്മാർക്ക്‌ നിക്ഷിപ്തത്താൽപര്യങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായി. താൽപര്യസംരക്ഷണത്തിന്‌ അവർ ദൈവസങ്കേതങ്ങളെ പരുവപ്പെടുത്തുകയും അതിനുതകുന്ന നിയമങ്ങളുണ്ടാക്കുകയും മതാധികാരവും പദവിയും നില നിർത്താൻ ശ്രമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഉത്തരം കിട്ടാതിരുന്ന പ്രാപഞ്ചികപ്രതിഭാസങ്ങൾക്കെല്ലാം ഒറ്റ ഉത്തരം ദൈവം എന്നതായിത്തീർന്നു.
പ്രതിഭയും യുക്തിയും പകർന്ന സ്വതന്ത്രചിന്ത, ദൈവ നിയമങ്ങളെ ലംഘിച്ചു കുതിച്ചു മുന്നോട്ടുപോകുന്നതുകണ്ട്‌ ഒരു കാലത്തെ മതാചാര്യന്മാർക്ക്‌ ഉറക്കം കെട്ടു. മതനിയമങ്ങളെ ലംഘിക്കുന്ന ആശയങ്ങളുമായി അവതരിക്കുന്ന നിഷേധികളെ നിലയ്ക്കുനിർത്താൻ അവർ ഏറ്റവും ക്രൂരവും വിട്ടുവീഴ്ചയില്ലാത്തതുമായ ശിക്ഷ വിധിച്ചു നടപ്പാക്കി. ആ നിഷേധിഗണത്തിൽപെട്ട ഒരു മഹാനാണ്‌ ഗലീലിയോ ഗലീലി. ടെലസ്കോപ്പിന്റെ പിതാവായി അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഗലീലിയോ ഗലീലി ഇറ്റലിയിലെ പിസയിലാണ്‌ പിറന്നത്‌.
ആധുനിക പരീക്ഷണ ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ സംസ്ഥാപകനായി ഗലീലിയോ വാഴ്ത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹം നമ്മുടെ ചിന്തയ്ക്ക്‌ പാത്രീഭവിക്കുന്നത്‌ ടെലസ്കോപ്പിന്‌ നാനൂറുവയസ്സ്‌ തികയുന്ന സന്ദർഭമായതുകൊണ്ടാണ്‌.

ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌
നാസയുടെ ഹബിൾ സേപ്സ്‌ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌ ശൂന്യാകാശ വാർത്തകളിൽ സൂപ്പർസ്റ്റാറായി വിളങ്ങുന്ന കാലമാണിത്‌. ടെലസ്കോപ്പുകളുടെ വകഭേദങ്ങൾ നാനൂറുവർഷങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ്‌ ഉണ്ടായത്‌. അതിന്റെ ആശയം യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടോളം പഴക്കമുള്ളതാണ്‌. അത്‌ ഇബ്ൻഅൽ ഹയ്ത്താമിന്റെ പ്രകാശസംബന്ധിയായ ഗവേഷണങ്ങളുടെ കാലമായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ ആ ആശയം പച്ചപിടിച്ചപ്പോഴേക്കും വർഷം 1608 ആയിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു. ജർമ്മൻ-ഡച്ച്‌ ലെൻസ്‌ നിർമ്മാതാവായിരുന്ന ഹാൻസ്‌ ലിപ്പർഷേ ആണ്‌ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌ അഥവാ ദൂരദർശിനി കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചതു. അതിനെക്കുറിച്ചു കേട്ടറിഞ്ഞ ഗലീലിയോ അതു കാണാതെതന്നെ, സ്വതന്ത്രമായി ഒരു ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌ നിർമ്മിച്ചു. ലിപ്പർഷേയുടെ രണ്ടു ലെൻസുകൾ വച്ച്‌ കളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന രണ്ടുകുട്ടികൾ യാദൃശ്ചികമായി അവ ചേർത്തുവച്ച്‌ ദൂരെയുള്ള വസ്തുവിനെ വ്യക്തമായി വലുതായി അടുത്തു കണ്ടു. അങ്ങനെ ടെലസ്കോപ്പിന്റെ ജനയിതാവിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം ലിപ്പർഷേയ്ക്ക്‌ അവകാശപ്പെട്ടതാണെങ്കിലും, ആ കാലത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഉപകരണവിദഗ്ദ്ധനായി അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഗലീലിയോ സ്വതന്ത്രമായി അതു വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്തതുകൊണ്ടാണ്‌ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌ കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചതു ഗലീലിയോ ആണെന്ന്‌ പരക്കെ പറയപ്പെടുന്നത്‌.
വിദ്യുത്കാന്തത്തരംഗങ്ങളെ വിദൂരസ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന്‌ സമാഹരിച്ച്‌ വിദൂരവസ്തുക്കളെ വ്യക്തമായിക്കാണുവാൻ സഹായിക്കുന്ന ടെലസ്കോപ്പിന്‌ ഇന്ന്‌ ഏറെ വകഭേദങ്ങളുണ്ട്‌. റിഫ്രാക്ടിംഗ്‌ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌, റിഫ്ലെക്ടിംഗ്‌ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌, കാറ്റാഡയോട്രോപ്പിക്‌ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌ എന്നിവയാണ്‌ പ്രകാശതരംഗങ്ങളാൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നവ. റേഡിയോ തരംഗത്താൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന റേഡിയോ ടെലസ്കോപ്പുമുണ്ട്‌. ലിപ്പർഷേ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഗലീലിയോ കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചതു പ്രകാശതരംഗത്താൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന റിഫ്‌റാക്ടിംഗ്‌ ടെലിസ്കോപ്പാണ്‌. അതിൽ രണ്ടു ലെൻസുകളാണ്‌ ഉള്ളത്‌. ഒരു വിദൂരവസ്തുവിൽനിന്ന്‌ വരുന്ന രശ്മികളെ ഫോക്കസ്‌ ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ലെൻസും തൽഫലമായുണ്ടാകുന്ന പ്രതിബിംബത്തെ വലുതാക്കി തലതിരിഞ്ഞ ബിംബമാക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു ലെൻസുമാണ്‌ ഗലീലിയോയുടെ ടെലസ്കോപ്പിൽ ഉള്ളത്‌.
ഇത്‌ 1609-ൽ ആണ്‌ ഗലീലിയോ വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്തത്‌. ആ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തത്തിന്‌ നാനൂറു വയസ്സാകുന്നു. അതു പ്രമാണിച്ച്‌ 2009 അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ജ്യോതിശ്ശാസ്ത്ര വർഷമായി ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഗലീലിയോയുടെ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തത്തിന്‌ അമ്പതു വയസ്സു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ന്യൂട്ടന്റെ റിഫ്ലെക്ടിംഗ്‌ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌ ഉണ്ടായി. ലിപ്പർഷേയും ഗലീലിയോയും ഉപയോഗിച്ച ലെൻസുകളുടെ സ്ഥാനത്ത്‌ മിറ്റുകൾ (‍ാശൃ‍ൃ‍ീ‍ാർ)സ്ഥാപിച്ചാണ്‌ ന്യൂട്ടൺ ടെലസ്കോപ്പിനെ നവീകരിച്ചതു. ലെൻസും മിററും ഉപയോഗിച്ചുള്ളതാണ്‌ കാറ്റാ ഡയോട്രോപിക്‌ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌.
ഒരു കണ്ടുപിടിത്തത്തിന്റെ സാധാരണ കൗതുകമല്ല ഗലീലിയോയുടെ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തം അന്ന്‌ ഉയർത്തിയത്‌. ഗ്രീക്ക്‌ ജ്യോതിശ്ശാസ്ത്രകാരനായിരുന്ന ടോളമി, ഭൂമിയെ ചുറ്റിയാണ്‌ സൂര്യനും മറ്റും സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നത്‌ എന്ന്‌ സിദ്ധാന്തിച്ച്‌, സമർത്ഥിച്ച്‌ അംഗീകാരം നേടിയ കാലത്താണ്‌ ഗലീലിയോയുടെ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌ ഉണ്ടായത്‌. പിസ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിൽ മാത്തമാറ്റിക്സ്‌ പ്രോഫസറായിരുന്ന കാലത്ത്‌ (1589) ഗലീലിയോയ്ക്ക്‌ അവിടെ ടോളമിയുടെ സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ പഠിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടിയും വന്നിരുന്നു. 1592ൽ പാദുവ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിലേക്ക്‌ പോയ ഗലീലിയോ, അവിടെ 18 വർഷം പ്രോഫസറായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. ഇക്കാലത്ത്‌ കോപ്പർ നിക്കസിന്റെ സൂര്യനെ ചുറ്റി ഭൂമിയും മറ്റും സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന സിദ്ധാന്തവും വന്നിരുന്നു. ജ്യോതിശ്ശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ അവഗാഹമായ പാണ്ഡിത്യം നേടി, 1609ൽ താൻ കണ്ടുപിടിച്ച ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌ വാനിലേക്ക്‌ തിരിച്ചുവച്ച്‌ കോപ്പർനിക്കസിനെ ശരിവയ്ക്കാൻ ഗലീലിയോയ്ക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞു. പ്രാമാണികന്മാരായിരുന്ന അരിസ്റ്റോട്ടിൽ, ടോളമി എന്നിവരുടെ സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ തെറ്റാണെന്നും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‌ ബോധ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
ടെലസ്കോപ്പിലൂടെ ഗലീലിയോ കണ്ട ചന്ദ്രന്റെ മുഖം, മലയും കുഴിയും കൊണ്ട്‌ നിറഞ്ഞതാണെന്നറിഞ്ഞു. ജൂപ്പിറ്ററിന്‌ (വ്യാഴം) നാലു ചന്ദ്രന്മാരുണ്ടെന്ന്‌ അദ്ദേഹം കണ്ടറിഞ്ഞു. അവയെ മെഡീഷ്യൻ ഗ്രഹങ്ങളെന്ന്‌ അദ്ദേഹം വിളിച്ചു. ഫ്ലോറൻസിലായിരുന്ന ഗലീലിയോ അവിടുത്തെ മെഡിസിസ്‌ രാജവംശത്തിന്റെ പ്രീതിനേടാനായിരുന്നത്രെ ഈ പേരിട്ടത്‌. അദ്ദേഹത്തിനങ്ങനെ കൊട്ടാരം ഗണിത ശാസ്ത്രകാരൻ എന്ന ബഹുമതി നേടാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു. ടോളമിയുടെ ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്രധാരണകളുടെ വൈകല്യങ്ങൾ സ്ഥാപിക്കാനും കോപ്പർനിക്കസിന്റെ സിദ്ധാന്തം സ മർപ്പിക്കുവാനും ഗലീലിയോയ്ക്ക്‌ അന്നു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ചലന നിയമ സംബന്ധിയായ ഗവേഷണങ്ങൾ തുടർന്ന ഗലീലിയോ, ചരിത്രത്തിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തപ്പെട്ട പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ ലോകത്തിന്‌ കാട്ടിക്കൊടുത്തു. പെന്റുല നിയമവും സ്വതന്ത്രമായി നിപതിക്കുന്ന വസ്തുക്കളുടെ നിയമവും (ഹമം ‍ീള ളൃലലഹ്യ)അവ സംബന്ധിച്ച്‌ പരസ്യ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങളും സുവിദിതങ്ങളാണ്‌.

കോപ്പർ നിക്കസും ഗലീലിയോയും
കോപ്പർ നിക്കസ്‌ സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ കാതോലിക്കപള്ളിയുടെ വിശ്വാസങ്ങൾക്കും നിയമങ്ങൾക്കും എതിരാണെന്ന സംഗതി കോപ്പർ നിക്കസിന്റെ കാലത്തു തന്നെ വാർത്താ വിശേഷമായി കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നതാണ്‌. അക്കാരണത്താൽത്തന്നെ ഒരു ലിഖിതമായി തന്റെ കണ്ടെത്തലുകൾ പ്രസിദ്ധം ചെയ്യാൻ കോപ്പർ നിക്കസ്‌ വൈമന്യം കാട്ടി. പക്ഷേ കോപ്പർ നിക്കസ്‌ തന്റെ കണ്ടെത്തലുകളുടെ വിവരങ്ങൾ ലോകപ്രസിദ്ധരായിരുന്ന യൂറോപ്പിലെ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്മാർക്ക്‌ കത്തിടപാടുകളിലൂടെ കൈമാറിയിരുന്നു. തന്റെ വാനശാസ്ത്ര സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ അങ്ങനെ വിനിമയം ചെയ്ത്‌ നിലനിർത്തുകയെന്ന്‌ വിവേചന ബുദ്ധി അദ്ദേഹം കാണിച്ചു. അല്ലാതെ അന്ന്‌ സർവ്വശക്തമായ മതാധികാരത്തോടും പടയ്ക്കിറങ്ങി സ്വയം ശിക്ഷ ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങാൻ പാകത്തിന്‌ തന്റെ സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ സ്വയം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുവാനും മറ്റും അറിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടു സ്വന്തം ജീവൻ എറിഞ്ഞുകൊടുക്കാൻ കോപ്പർ നിക്കസ്‌ തയ്യാറല്ലായിരുന്നു. ഒരു സാമാന്യ വിലയിരുത്തലിൽ അതു ഭീരുത്വമായി വ്യാഖ്യാനിക്കപ്പെട്ടേക്കാം. പക്ഷേ ബുദ്ധിമാനായിരുന്ന കോപ്പർ നിക്കസ്‌ തന്നെ ഭീരുവേന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നതിലല്ല പ്രാധാന്യം കൽപ്പിച്ചതു. തന്റെ പുതിയ വാനതത്വങ്ങൾക്ക്‌ പെട്ടെന്ന്‌ നാഥനില്ലാതാകരുതെന്ന്‌ അദ്ദേഹം കരുതിയിട്ടുണ്ടാവണം. ഒടുവിൽ ശാരീരികാസ്വാസ്ഥ്യത്തിന്‌ കീഴ്പ്പെട്ട്‌ അദ്ദേഹം മരണപ്പെടുന്നതിന്‌ (1543 മെയ്‌ 24) ഏതാനും മാസം മുമ്പു മാത്രമാണ്‌ കോപ്പർനിക്കസ്‌ തന്റെ സിദ്ധാന്തം പുസ്തകരൂപത്തിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചതു.
കോപ്പർനിക്കസിനെ സാധൂകരിക്കേണ്ട ഊഴം 1613ൽ ഗലീലിയോയ്ക്ക്‌ കൈവന്നു. അത്‌ മതനിഷേധമാവാതിരിക്കാൻ കോപ്പർനിക്കൻ സിദ്ധാന്തം കാത്തോലിക്കൻ മതസംഹിതയ്ക്കും ബൈബിൾ പ്രതിപാദ്യത്തിനും എതിരല്ലെന്ന്‌ സമർപ്പിക്കാൻ ഗലീലിയോ ശ്രമിച്ചു. പക്ഷേ ശത്രുക്കൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനെതിരെ റോമിലെ മതദ്രോഹ കോടതിയിൽ കത്തുകൾ അയച്ചു. 1616-ൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ റോമിൽ വിളിച്ചു ശാസിച്ചു. കോപ്പർ നിക്കസിനെ ന്യായീകരിക്കാൻ പാടില്ല എന്നുതാക്കീതും ചെയ്തു.
എന്നാൽ 1632-ൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മാസ്റ്റർപീസ്‌ ശാസ്ത്രഗ്രന്ഥം (ളളഷഷറ) പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. അതിൽ അദ്ദേഹം ടോളമി-അരിസ്റ്റോട്ടിൽമാരുടെ തത്വവും കോപ്പർ നിക്കൽ തത്വവും താരതമ്യം ചെയ്തു. കോപ്പർ നിക്കൻ ചിന്തയാണ്‌ യുക്തിസഹമായ മേന്മയുള്ളത്‌ എന്ന്‌ പറഞ്ഞു. റോമൻ കോടതിയുടെ താക്കീതു ലംഘിച്ചതിനു ഗലീലിയോയെ പരസ്യമായി മാപ്പു പറയാനും പുസ്തകത്തിൽ പറഞ്ഞത്‌ പിൻവലിക്കാനും നിർബന്ധിച്ചു. അതുകൊണ്ടും ശിക്ഷ തീർന്നില്ല., ജീവപര്യന്തം തടവിനു വിധിച്ചു.
വാർദ്ധക്യം ഏറിയപ്പോൾ വീട്ടുതടങ്കലായി ശിക്ഷ ഇളവുചെയ്തു. ടെലസ്കോപ്പിലൂടെ നിരന്തരം ശൂന്യാകാശ പ്രഭാപൂരം കണ്ടുകണ്ട്‌ അദ്ദേഹം അന്ധനായി. അങ്ങനെ വാനവിസ്മയങ്ങളുടെ ലോകത്തേക്ക്‌ മനുഷ്യനെ കാഴ്ച കാണാൻ ടെലസ്കോപ്പ്‌ കണ്ടുപിടിച്ച്‌ മാടിവിളിച്ച ആ മഹാമനീഷിയുടെ കാഴ്ച ശക്തി പൊലിഞ്ഞു.
കോപ്പർനിക്കസിന്റെ ബുദ്ധിപൂർവ്വമായ നിലപാട്‌ മതദ്രോഹവിചാരണ വേളയിൽ ഗലീലിയോ സ്വീകരിച്ചിരുന്നു. സ്വന്തം ശാസ്ത്ര സംഹിതകൾ വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞ്‌ മത യജമാനന്മാരുടെ അപ്രീതി സമ്പാദിച്ച ഗിയോഡാനോ ബ്രൂണോയെ അവർ ചുട്ടു കൊന്നു. ആ സംഭവം മനസ്സിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഗലീലിയോ അതേ ഗതി തനിക്കുണ്ടാകാതിരിക്കാൻ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിരുന്നു. താൻ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ സത്യങ്ങൾ ലോകത്തിനു കൈമാറാൻ താൻ ഉണ്ടായെ മതിയാകു. മരണത്തിന്‌ കീഴ്പ്പെട്ടു കൂടാ. പള്ളിക്കാർ വിചാരണ വേളയിലെ പീഡനകാലത്ത്‌ ഗലീലിയോയെ നിലത്തിട്ടു കയർകെട്ടി വലിച്ചിഴച്ചു എന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. കോപ്പർ നിക്കസ്‌ പറഞ്ഞത്‌ സത്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം, ഭൂമി സൂര്യനെ ചുറ്റിയല്ല കറങ്ങുന്നത്‌. എന്നു പറയാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തോട്‌ ആജ്ഞാപിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹം അനുസരിച്ചു. ആ നിമിഷം തന്നെ ചരിത്ര പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഒരാത്മഗതം അദ്ദേഹത്തിൽ നിന്നു ബഹിർഗമിച്ചു. ഭൂമി സൂര്യനെ ചുറ്റിത്തന്നെ കറങ്ങുന്നു. അത്‌ കീഴടങ്ങലായിരുന്നില്ല. സത്യത്തിന്റെ കാഴ്ചകൾ ഇനിയും ഭൂമിയിലെ സമസൃഷ്ടങ്ങൾക്കു നൽകാൻ ഏറെയുണ്ട്‌. അതിനു മുമ്പ്‌ സ്വയം മരണത്തിനു കീഴടങ്ങരുത്‌.... അതായിരുന്നു അതിന്റെ അർത്ഥം.
കാലം പിന്നെയും കടന്നു. നാലോളം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ കൊഴിഞ്ഞു വീണു. 1979-ൽ പോപ്പ്‌ ജോൺപോൾ രണ്ടാമൻ, ഗലീലിയോട്‌ സഭ നീതികേടു കാട്ടിയോ എന്ന്‌ പഠിക്കാൻ ഒരു കമ്മീഷനെ നിയോഗിച്ചു. 1984-ൽ ആ കമ്മീഷൻ റിപ്പോർട്ട്‌ സമർപ്പിച്ചു: ഗലീലിയോയെ ശിക്ഷിക്കാൻ പാടില്ലായിരുന്നു!

തൃപ്പൂണിത്തുറ ഒരു പരിമിതമായ കുടുംബ വൃത്തത്തിലൊതുങ്ങുന്നില്ല, കുട്ടിയുടെ ചിന്തകള്‍. ചുറ്റുമുള്ള ജീവിതത്തോടും അതിലെ പൊരുത്തക്കേടുകളോടുമൊക്കെ പ്രതികരിക്കാന്‍ ആ മനസ്സുവെമ്പുന്നു. കൌമാരത്തിലെ മയില്‍പ്പീലിയുടെ സ്വപ്നങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ പരുപരുത്ത ജീവിത യാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക്‌ മനസ്സുകുതറിയോടുന്നു. അച്ഛനുമമ്മയും അവരുടെ സ്നേഹവുമിപ്പോള്‍ നേരിയൊരോര്‍മ്മയാവുന്നു. പകരം ജീവിതസത്യങ്ങളില്‍ പിഴയ്ക്കുന്ന മനുഷ്യമനസ്സുകളുടെ പാഴ്‌ പ്രണയങ്ങളും പാപചിന്തകളും മനസ്സിനെ അലോസരപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ആരെയാണു പഴിക്കേണ്ടത്‌. മനുഷ്യനെയോ അവണ്റ്റെ സൃഷ്ടാവിനെയോ എന്നോര്‍ത്ത്‌ കവി മനസ്സ്‌ വ്യാകുലപ്പെടുന്നു. മീര യു.മേനോന്‍ എഴുതിയ ഒരു ഹൃദയത്തിണ്റ്റെ യാത്ര എന്ന കവിതാസമാഹാരത്തിണ്റ്റെ അവതാരികയില്‍ ഡോ.കെ.ജി.പൌലോസ്‌ ഇങ്ങിനെ വിലയിരുത്തുന്നു. ഇപ്പോള്‍ മണിപ്പാല്‍ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയില്‍ രണ്ടാം വര്‍ഷം ജേര്‍ണ്ണലിസം ബിരുദ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനിയാണ്‌ മീര യു.മേനോന്‍. ജനിച്ച നാള്‍ മുതല്‍ തന്നെ ശരീരത്തിണ്റ്റെ പരിമിതികളോട്‌ സ്വയം ആവാഹിച്ചെടുത്ത മനസ്സിണ്റ്റെ ഉള്‍ക്കരുത്തുകൊണ്ടുമാത്രം പടവെട്ടി മുന്നേറുന്ന മീരയ്ക്ക്‌ ജീവിതം എന്നും ഒരുവെല്ലുവിളിയായിരുന്നു. ജീവിതത്തിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന ഓരോ വെല്ലുവിളികളും പുതിയ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ വ്യത്യസ്തമായി ചെയ്യാനുള്ള അവസരമായിക്കണ്ട്‌ കണ്ണുകളിലെ തിളക്കം നഷ്ടപ്പെടാതെ സൂക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ ആ കുട്ടിക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ആ തിളക്കമാണ്‌ ആ ജീവനാന്തം കിടക്കയില്‍ കഴിയേണ്ടിവരുമെന്നു ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ വിധിയെഴുതിയ മീരയെ മുഖ്യധാരയിലെത്തിച്ചത്‌. ചികിത്സാകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നു ചികിത്സാ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്കുള്ള അച്ഛനമ്മമാരുടെ ഒപ്പമുള്ളയാത്രയും അതിണ്റ്റേതായ ശാരീരിക വേദനകളും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട കളികളുടെ ബാല്യവും ഒറ്റപ്പെടലുമെല്ലാം സഹിക്കാന്‍ പ്രേരകമായതും മറ്റൊന്നുമല്ല. മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ ശുശ്രൂഷയും പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയും പ്രോത്സാഹനവുമെല്ലാം അതു കഴിഞ്ഞേ വരൂ. മിത്രമോ ശത്രുവോ എന്ന കവിതയില്‍ മരണത്തോട്‌ മീര ചോദിക്കുന്നു. നിഴലായെന്നും നീയെണ്റ്റെകൂടെ, എന്തിനായെപ്പോഴും വന്നീടുന്നു, എന്ന്‌ കൂടെ കൂട്ടണോ വഴി മാറി നടക്കണോ, എന്നറിയില്ല. ജനിച്ചനാള്‍ മുതല്‍ എന്നും വരുന്നവനെ എന്നും മീര സങ്കടപ്പെടുന്നു. നട്ടെല്ലിനു പൂര്‍ണ്ണവളര്‍ച്ചയാകാതെ ജനിച്ച മീരയ്ക്ക്‌ മൂന്നാം മാസത്തിലും മാസത്തിലും 13 വയസ്സിലും (മണിപ്പാല്‍ മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളേജില്‍) ശസ്ത്രക്രിയകള്‍ വേണ്ടിവന്നു. എറണാകുളത്തും കൊച്ചിയിലുമായി ഫിസിയോതെറാപ്പികള്‍ക്കുശേഷം സ്ഥിരമായി വീട്ടില്‍വന്നു ഫിസിയോതെറാപ്പി 10 വര്‍ഷത്തോളം നടത്തിയ ഡോ.ലാസറിണ്റ്റെ ശ്രമങ്ങളിലാണ്‌ 7 വയസ്സില്‍ ഉപകരണസഹായത്തോടെ മീരയ്ക്ക്‌ നടക്കാറായത്‌. 10 വര്‍ഷത്തിലധികം ഫിസിയോതെറാപ്പി തുടര്‍ന്നു. ഇതിനിടെ രണ്ടുവര്‍ഷം വയനാട്ടിലെ അയ്യപ്പന്‍ വൈദ്യരുടെ ആദിവാസി ചികിത്സയും പരീക്ഷിച്ചു. ഇതൊന്നും മീരയുടെ ജീവിതത്തെയോ പഠനത്തേയോ ബാധിച്ചില്ല. സി.ബി.എസ്‌.സി 10 ല്‍ 84 12 ല്‍ 88 % മാര്‍ക്ക്‌ മലയാളം-ഇംഗ്ളീഷ്‌ പ്രസംഗം, വാര്‍ത്താവായന ഡിബേറ്റ്‌, കവിതാരചന, കവിതാലാപനം എന്നിവയില്‍ സ്കൂളിലും പുറത്തും നിരവധി സമ്മാനങ്ങള്‍ കെ.പി.സി.സിയുടെ സാംസ്കാരികവിഭാഗമായ സംസ്കാരസാഹിതിയുടെ 2000 രൂപ ക്യാഷ്‌ അവാര്‍ഡുള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള കവിതാപുരസ്കാരം എന്നിവ നേട്ടങ്ങളില്‍ ചിലതുമാത്രം. 10 ല്‍ മലയാളത്തിന്‌ 97 % മാര്‍ക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഇതിനിടയില്‍ ഭരതനാട്യം പഠിച്ച്‌ ഗുരുവായൂരില്‍ അരങ്ങേറാനും മീരയ്ക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞു. 2009 ജനുവരി 26 മീരയുടെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ മറ്റൊരുനാഴികക്കല്ലായിമാറി. മണിപ്പാലിലെ 20 കോളേജുകളിലെ 1000 ത്തോളം വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ക്കൊപ്പം അവിടത്തെ റിപ്പബ്ളിക്‌ ദിനത്തിലെ മാര്‍ച്ച്‌ പാസ്റ്റില്‍ വിജയകരമായി പങ്കെടുക്കാനായത്‌ മീരയ്ക്ക്‌ അത്ഭുതത്തോടെ മാത്രമേ ഓര്‍ക്കാന്‍ പറ്റുന്നുള്ളു. രണ്ടു ദിവസം മുമ്പാണ്‌ അവിടുത്തെ ജോയിണ്റ്റ്‌ ഡയറക്ടര്‍ സകുജ സാര്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കാമോ എന്ന്‌ അവളോടു ചോദിച്ചത്‌. പെട്ടെന്നു സമ്മതിച്ച മീര രണ്ടു ദിവസത്തെ എന്‍.സി.സി കേഡറ്റുകളുടെ പരിശീലനത്തിനു ശേഷം ആണ്‌ പങ്കെടുത്തത്‌. പരസഹായമില്ലാതെ തന്നെ നടക്കാന്‍ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുന്ന മീരയുടെ ധൈര്യം അന്ന്‌ കര്‍ണ്ണാടകയിലെ വിവിധ പത്രങ്ങളും ചില വെബ്സൈറ്റുകളും പ്രാധാന്യത്തോടെ ഫോട്ടോ സഹിതം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. 13 വയസ്സിലെ മണിപ്പാലിലെ ശസ്ത്രക്രിയയ്ക്കു ശേഷമാണ്‌ മീര കവിത എഴുതിത്തുടങ്ങിയത്‌. ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഒറ്റപ്പെടലും സങ്കടങ്ങളും, മീര കടലാസില്‍ പകര്‍ത്തി. എന്തിനോ വേണ്ടി തേങ്ങുന്നതെന്‍ മനം അറിയില്ലയെന്തിനുവേണ്ടിയെന്ന്‌ - ആദ്യകാലത്തെഴുതിയ മനസ്സ്‌ എന്ന കവിതയില്‍ കിട്ടാക്കനിയാണെന്നറിഞ്ഞിട്ടും നടത്തുന്ന സ്നേഹത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള മാനം പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. സ്വന്തം വേദനമാത്രമല്ല, മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ വേദനകളും മീര കവിതക്കുവിഷയമാക്കി. പുതിയകാലത്തിണ്റ്റെ പുനര്‍വ്യാകരണങ്ങളില്‍ വഴിമാറുന്ന ഹൃദയബന്ധങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള കുറിപ്പുകളോ, പ്രതികരണങ്ങളോ നേര്‍ക്കാഴ്ചകളോ ഒക്കെയാണ്‌ കൂടുതല്‍ കവിതകളും. അച്ഛനെ വൃദ്ധസദനത്തിലാക്കുന്ന ഒരു മകളുടെ ധര്‍മ്മസങ്കടമാണ്‌. അച്ഛനെയാണെനിക്കിഷ്ടം എന്ന കവിതയിലെ ഇതിവൃത്തം. വൃദ്ധസദനത്തില്‍ പടിയില്‍വച്ച്‌, പുഞ്ചിരിയച്ഛന്‍തൂകിയല്ലോ കരയുവാന്‍ കണ്ണീരുതിര്‍ന്നിരുന്നോമനസ്സില്

‍ വികാരം തണുത്തിരുന്നോ. എന്ന്‌ അച്ഛണ്റ്റെ മനസ്സിനെ അവള്‍ പഠിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ഓണസന്ധ്യ ഓരോര്‍മ്മ സന്ധ്യ എന്ന കവിതയിലാകട്ടെ, ഓണത്തിന്‌ പൂക്കളമൊരുക്കി മകനെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന അമ്മയുടെ വിതുമ്പലുകളാണ്‌. മകനെ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്ന അമ്മയ്ക്കുകിട്ടിയത്‌ ഈ-മെയിലില്‍ വന്ന ആശംസകാര്‍ഡാണ്‌. എന്നുവരുമവന്‍ എന്നുവരുമവന്‍ ഓണപ്പൂക്കളമിട്ടീടുവാന്‍ എന്നു കരയുന്ന അമ്മ ആശംസാ കാര്‍ഡു കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ വിലപിക്കുന്നത്‌, തിരുവോണനാളില്‍ തുമ്പപ്പൂചോറായ്‌, വിഷാദമാണോയെന്നുണ്ണീവിളമ്പീത്‌, കണ്ണുനീരായതില്‍ സാമ്പാറും കാളനുംഈയോണ സ്മൃതികളായ്‌ കുട്ടുകറികളും വായിക്കുന്നവരെയും വായിച്ചു കേള്‍ക്കുന്നവരെയും കണ്ണീരണിയിക്കും. മനുഷ്യരുടെ മാത്രമല്ല മറ്റു ദുഃഖങ്ങളും മീര കണ്ടു. ഉത്സവങ്ങളിലെ ആനയുടെ ദുഃഖം, ഗജേന്ദ്രണ്റ്റെ കണ്ണുനീര്‍ എന്ന കവിതയില്‍ വിവരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന - അവനുടെ നെഞ്ചിലെ നൊമ്പരങ്ങള്‍ ആരറിയാന്‍, ആരാലറിയാന്‍ എന്ന ആനയുടെ ഭാഗത്തുനിന്നു ചിന്തിക്കുന്നു. എല്ലാവരും വെറുക്കുന്ന കൊതുകിണ്റ്റെ ഭാഗത്തു നിന്നുള്ള ചിന്തകളാണ്‌ കൊതുകിണ്റ്റെ കുമ്പസാരം എന്ന കവിതയില്‍ കണ്ണുണ്ടെങ്കിലും കാണാത്തവരെയും കാതുണ്ടെങ്കിലും കേള്‍ക്കാത്തവരെയും കുറിച്ച്‌ പറയുന്ന ഉയരുവതില്ലൊരു മന്യനും ഭൂമിയില്‍ എന്ന കവിതക്കാണ്‌ സാംസ്കാരികസാഹിതിയുടെ അവാര്‍ഡ്‌ ലഭിച്ചത്‌. വൈകല്യമുള്ളവരെ സഹായിക്കാനായി കുനിയുമ്പോഴാണ്‌ നാം കൂടുതല്‍ ഉയരുന്നതെന്ന്‌ കവി അഭിപ്രായപ്പെടുന്നു. മാധ്യമത്തില്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച മൊബൈല്‍ എന്ന കവിത എവിടെയെന്നറിയുവാന്‍ വാങ്ങിക്കൊടുത്തൊരാ മൊബൈലും മകളുമിന്നെവിടെയെന്നറിയുമോവായിച്ചിട്ട്‌ ഒരു നോവല്‍ വായിച്ച പ്രതീതിയാണെന്ന്‌ ഒന്നിലധികം പേര്‍ കത്തെഴുതുകയും വിളിച്ചുപറയുകയുമുണ്ടായി. തൃപ്പൂണിത്തുറ നടക്കുന്ന ചടങ്ങില്‍ പ്രശസ്തകവി ചെമ്മനം ചാക്കോയാണ്‌ പുസ്തകം പ്രകാശനം ചെയ്യുന്നത്‌. അവതാരികയെഴുതിയ കേരള കലാമണ്ഡലം വൈസ്‌ ചാന്‍സലര്‍ ഡോ.കെ.ജി.പൌലോസ്‌ ആദ്ധ്യക്ഷം വഹിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു കവി എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള മീരയുടെ പുതിയ യാത്രയുടെ തുടക്കമാണ്‌ ഈ കവിതാസമാഹാരം. മീര പറയുന്നപോല, എണ്റ്റേതുമാത്രമീദീര്‍ഘയാത്ര സ്നേഹവാത്സല്യങ്ങള്‍ തേടും യാത്ര ഒരിക്കലുമവസാനിക്കാത്ത യാത്രജവഹര്‍ലാല്‍ നെഹ്‌റു ഡയറിയില്‍ പകര്‍ത്തിയ റോബര്‍ട്ട്‌ ഫ്രോസ്റ്ററിണ്റ്റെ കവിതയെ ഓര്‍മ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. മിലെസ്‌ റ്റൊ ഗൊ ബെഫൊരെ ഇ സ്ളീപ്‌ മിലെസ്‌ റ്റൊ ഗൊ ബെഫൊരെ ഇ സ്ളീപ്‌

This question is perhaps the most difficult question one could
answer completely and fully satisfactorily. What is a woman?

The answer to this question is multifaceted.
Not one answer would do justice to the word woman.
There are millions of answers to this question. Each answer varies from person to person.
Such a complex and faceless word is "woman", which is 100% faithful to the person it designates to.

To some woman is poetry. To some woman is embodiment of sex.
To some woman is mother, sister and all that shit.
Why this word woman does not have an identity of its own?

History could not tell why it is so. No novelist or poet could tell why it is so.
Not even God who created this weird looking creature fails to satisfy man with a complete definition to this word.
In a weak moment God created woman for man, they say.
Did He create this woman to give worry to Man?

If you ask me I would like to define woman this way:-

"Woman is both a pulp fiction and an encyclopedia of mysteries,
secrets and all the filth of the world, who can produce an exact replica of human being if possible."

I never could fathom the heart of any woman: be it my mother, sister, wife or lover, or my daughter.
Every one seems exactly the same.
some are acquainted faces, some are good looking only, some are just weird.

I don't know much about them though i have spent my life with a woman
and have women in my family too for more than 4 decades. Is it so with you all too?

Born on 27^th April 1928 son of an Anchal Master in a financially backward family at Poovampara village, Alamcode near Attingal town, Thiruvananthapuram district. From the very childhood he had the ambition of becoming a doctor with the intention of serving the poor and needy fellow beings. After completing the preliminary education he secured admission overcoming many adverse circumstances in the Madras Medical College and won MBBS degree with flying colours. He secured a couple of awards and honours for his covetable achievements in Gynaecology. In those days male doctors in Kerala didn’t like to specialize in Gynaecology because there was no scope for private practice. Even in these circumstances he opted for Gynaecology because he was interested not in private practice, but in teaching and research in antenatal care and intranatal care. With this goal in mind he secured admission for MD in the Madras Medical College itself in the Central Government quota and became the first qualified male Gynaecologist in Kerala. He was a residential scholarship holder throughout his medical studies for MBBS, DGO and MD.

After his successful completion of medical education he got appointment in Kerala State Health Services. He served in the Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram for few years. Then he was transferred and posted to the family planning training center because of his interest in family planning programme. There he was giving formal training in family planning to all the doctors of the State Health Service with particular stress in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His intention was to impart better training in antenatal care and intranatal care along with training in Family planning for doctors working in peripheral centers so that they will give better care to the women in Kerala. His excellent services in the field of family planning and the training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology were highly appreciated by the doctors, most of them his old students. He asked for 25 beds in Women and Children Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, where there were 250 beds, to impart practical training to the doctors. The Directorate of Health Service did not permit this. Therefore he opted back to his parent department, the Medical College (SAT Hospital). Out of 6 units in SAT Hospital his was the most popular unit. His colleagues and seniors could not tolerate this, and they fabricated allegations against him and with their influence at the ministerial level he was transferred. He did not join the new post. The hostility continued and they managed to get him compulsory retirement.

This was a blessing in disguise for him and his activities. He decided to devote his full attention for the rest of his life in the prenatal and intranatal care of the needy women folk of Kerala and propagate Family planning. He fulfilled his intention by starting a small private hospital named G.G. Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for women and children, the first of its kind in Kerala state.

Started in a very humble way in 1975, G.G. Hospital has now emerged as one of the leading multispeciality hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram. Housed in three multistoried buildings, this hospital can now accommodate about 250 patients. It is functioning in a service and research oriented manner providing jobs to 250 employees who enjoy several types of additional service benefits like pension, free refreshments, travel facilities, marriage aids for self as wall as children, interest free loans for purchasing land and houses. Dr.Velayudhan had started a pension scheme for his employees with the help of Life Insurance Corporation of India. The various schemes he started for the benefit of his employees and public has earned him a name as a doctor with a difference who upholds the motto ’Service to humanity to the Almighty God’.

Dr G. Velayudhan, a Gynaecologist of par excellence in Kerala, has not limited his activities in his professional field alone. Now he has been recognized and revered as one of the veterans in the field on social services in Kerala.

A small resume of his different service activities is given below.

Professional Excellence

He has distinguished himself in his professional career also by doing research work. Sterility was his main subject of interest. Unexplained fetal loss was his main concern. Repeated abortions, IUGR, premature deliveries, Pre-eclampsia, Eclamsia and Diabetes complicating of pregnancy are the complications commonly met with in his practice. His contention was that the obstruction of the spiral arterioles is the cause. Thrombosis of these arterioles was a universal finding in all these cases during the post-mortem examination. He attempted to prevent the thrombosis of the spiral arterioles during pregnancy by administering Heparin during pregnancy. About 1000 cases have been treated supplementing with large dose of estrogen in the form of Lynoral in varying dozes. Thus about 1000 cases were treated. In these cases the fetal loss was less than 0.5%.

Treatment for cervical incompetency

Cervical incompetence is a common complication in pregnancy leading to sudden abortion and premature labour. Ligaturing the cervical canal is the treatment for a very long time. In this method ligature is put after reflecting the bladder as high as the internal os. In this method the incidence of failure is much less than that of other methods.

Tubectomy

During the postnatal period the tissue just below the umbilical is found to be very thin. This can be opened through a small nick and through this sterilization can be effected.

To impart the knowledge how to look after a pregnant lady herself a book titled “Amma Akumbol Ariyan” was published and circulated as widely as possible through the social welfare department and Panchayaths to reach large number of people.

In pregnancy ladies develop minor symptoms like pain in the legs cramps and varicose vein etc. Most of these symptoms are due to lack of planned exercise. Physiotherapy is being tried from the very beginning of pregnancy with which these symptoms are found to be relieved.

Professional Experience

Family Planning

When Dr G. Velayudhan started his activities in medical field, people of Kerala were not aware at all of the necessity of family planning, antenatal care and intranatal care. He than realized the need of the hour is proper education about the vital importance of antenatal care, intranatal care and family planning. First of all people must be made to realize the necessity for limiting their families. The people should also understand the simplicity and harmlessness and advantages and disadvantages of the various methods for practicing family planning.

Keeping this in his mind, he did pioneering work in this field, through hundreds of popular articles and radio talks. He handled health columns in the then most popular newspaper Kerala Kaumudi and periodicals like Kala Kaumudi for imparting medical education for the common people. Through a regular column of questions and answers he cleared doubts of the common people about the necessity for antenatal and intranatal care and impressed the risk of unlimited number of births and different methods of family planning. These articles and radio talks were of immense impact.

Tubectomy

He popularized Tubectomy, by performing it through 1.5 cm incision at a time it was being done through 15-20 cms incision.

In those days in S.A.T Hospital ladies had to often wait 6 to 7 days for sterilization operating done and then about 5-6 days post operatively. This was difficult for mothers having 10, 12 or more children at home. Dr G. Velayudhan offered to do the operations daily. In this way he had done more than 500 operations, so that the hospital stay reduced to 6-7 days and this has created a great boom in the family planning field. He also started doing interval tubectomy, an operation done in between pregnancies. He was the first person who started sterilization operation for ladies after home deliveries. When the Government started propagating vaginal sterilization he did the first vaginal sterilization, he did the first vaginal sterilization. Because of the disadvantages of vaginal sterilization it did not become popular

Vasectomy

Dr G. Velayudhan did superb contribution in popularizing vasectomy too. Having himself undergone vasectomy operation, he performed more than 1500 operations while he was working in the Government Family Planning Training Centre. These operations were done through 2-3 mm incision under local anaesthesia without any stitch. Doctors were also trained. The simplicity of these operations, coupled with the monetary incentive offered by the Government made family planning very popular even among illiterate people and the hard-core society like fishermen belonging to Christianity.

IUCD

The introduction of IUCD for birth control activated Dr G. Velayudhan to conduct research for its betterment, which gained fruits also. He wrote several articles and gave radio talks lucidly explaining the merits of this method. Later IUCD became very popular as a temporary method of birth control.

Artificial abortion (MTP)

Dr G. Velayudhan, through popular science articles did creditable work to remove the prevailing prejudice against legislation of abortion. He fought against artificial abortion done by untrained personnel by crude methods, which ruined the lives of innumerable innocent mothers not only unmarried but married and living with husbands. He predicted legalization of abortions in the near future, which came true also. He was the one who did the first MTP in SAT Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.

The propaganda by Dr G. Velayudhan for family planning along with particular stress for antenatal and intranatal care and his elucidation of the risks associated with increasing number of pregnancies and labours were very effective and encouraging

III. Campaign against Social Evils

Dr G. Velayudhan’s campaign against social evils like smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction and social misdeeds also is worth mentioning. During the year in which World Health Organisation declared war on smoking he wrote an effective article in Kerala Kaumudi daily explaining the evils of smoking. This article was the first of its kind in Malayalam. He also started advising the patients who came to him for treatment in sterility etc against smoking and alcohol use. He also erected large signboards in nearby seashore villages exhibiting the bad effects of smoking and alcohol use.

He also through press campaigned against social misdeeds and social injustice.

Promotion of Communal Harmony

In the field of communal harmony too his presence was very much felt. The seashore villages of Thiruvananthapuram district usually witness communal riots between two communities. He was one among who often visit the shelter camps after such riots and provide food and medicines. In one of the riots so many Hindus were deprived of their homes in Poonthura village. This village was adopted by his hospital and temporary shelters were built for the homeless and offered to construct some houses. He was told that the government was having a scheme for building houses for all those who lost their houses.

In the Second riot, Muslims suffered a lot and the people who were accommodated in schools were helped by providing all the utensils (Milk, rice ) . He constantly wrote against it in news papers.

Contributions to the Rural Development

Dr G. Velayudhan’s contribution to the field of rural development and the

improvement of the living conditions of the villagers are significant.

Panathura, a island village – a strip of land surrounded by the sea and backwaters, 3 kms in length and with an average width of 80 meters, situated midway between Thiruvananthapuram and Kovalam was adopted in 1989 by Dr G. Velayudhan for comprehensive study and development.

At the outset, enumeration of the total number of houses and the number of inmates in each house was taken and house number (totaling 223) and cards for inmates were given. The living conditions of the majority of villagers were miserable. Some were homeless also.

He started a clinic in the village in a house renovated by him. The clinic functions two days a week. Free medicines are distributed. Those who need special treatment were brought to the city in the hospital ambulance and necessary treatments are made available in different hospitals including his own G.G. Hospital.

For recreation of villagers arrangements are also made there. A colour Television is installed in the clinic for public viewing. Film shows were also arranged three days in a week. During the film show health education talks were also arranged.

The main occupation of the villagers of Panathura is fishing and coir making. These jobs are seasonal. The villagers had to face starvation during monsoon. To solve this problem free food once a day for 6 days a week is arranged.

With a view for providing the villagers full time jobs, it was decided to give them training in making products from coir, which was abundantly available. About 60 young natives were taken in a video coach to the coir training center at Kalavoor in Alapuzha District to make them acquainted with coir products productions and to appreciate what are the products they could make out of coir. A shed was also constructed and machineries provided for training. On his request the central coir society at Kalavoor deputed a trainer to impart training for eight months. A sewing class was also started for unemployed girls.

The children of the village studying in primary classes were supplied with two sets of uniforms each. Clothes were also being distributed among poor old women.

A children’s park was also constructed for the entertainment of children.

G.G. Hospital purchased land about 30 cents and a two storied building was constructed with 16 rooms. Of these 15 rooms were given to the poorest of the poor homeless villagers.

22 latrines of modern type were also constructed for the use of villagers.

A project officer was appointed to supervise the activities in this adopted village. In this small island there was different communities and political parties. These groups were at loggerheads. With the object of bringing harmony among them games were conducted and prizes were distributed.

Dr G. Velayudhan has undertaken another housing scheme by name “Dr Ambedkar Memorial Housing scheme for the homeless”.

He launched this scheme in 1993, with a view to provide houses to people belonging to the poor and backward sections of the society. Its object is to provide small concrete house with a veranda, a living room, a kitchen and a modern latrine to every homeless person in Kadakampally Panchayath, near Thiruvananthapuram city.

In 2003 he has started another housing scheme again in 8 panchayaths namely Pallichal, Kottukal, Maranalloor, Malayinkil, Vilappil, Athiyannoor, Balaramapuram and Nemom. Here he constructed 140 houses for the homeless.

He had introduced another scheme to provide houses for the homeless employees for his institution as a part of their welfare programme. 24 houses were constructed so far.

Dr G. Velayudhan also took initiative to start various welfare programmes for more than 300 families belonging to Below Poverty Line in the urban slums of Pattom, Kesavadasapuram Area under T.P.A.F.

51 sanitary latrines have already been constructed at a cost of Rs. 5000 each. Further activities in this line are in progress. The doctors of G. G. Hospital under the guidance of Dr G. Velayudhan are conducting medical camps in this area too. A pre-school for the children of the age group 2 to 31/2 years was started at Thaikootam of this area.

In addition to all these G.G. Hospital is conducting Pulse Polio Immunization Programme for the children of this area also in association with the City Corporation.

Dr G. Velayudhan has taken the responsibility of providing total immunization of all the children in the project area.

Sri Chitra Home is a government run institution for the destitutes, particularly women and children started by the Maharaja of Travancore. There are 250 – 300 inmates of whom the majority are orphaned children. Visiting the institution and finding the condition of the Home, G.G. Hospital decided to associate itself with this institution for all round improvement of it.

There was a primary school in the premises. The school was in a pathetic state, without any furniture and the class (4 divisions) were conducted in a big, unpartitioned hall by 2 teachers including the head master. At Dr G. Velayudhan’s instance, another hall opposite to the first one was partitioned into class rooms and all necessary furniture benches, desks, tables, chairs and black boards were provided for the proper running of the classes as in a modern primary school. The students were provided with 2 sets of uniforms and a pair of slippers each and by influencing the authorities 4 teachers were appointed to handle the classes. A separate room was constructed for the headmaster and latrines were also provided.

All the inmates were brought to G.G. Hospital by the Hospital ambulance in batches of 15-20, subjected to physical checkup, including blood examination, ECG, dental care etc. Almost all of them were found to be suffering from one disease or other and were given free treatment. This medical link continued: if any inmate falling sick, on intimation will be brought to the hospital in the hospital ambulance and given not only free treatment as in patient as well as out patient but also free food for the patient and the bystander. An eye camp was also conducted at the Home with the help of the Ophthalmic Department of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and the Ophthalmologists of G.G. Hospital and those who were found to have eye diseases were given free treatment.

Job training was imparted to the inmates. The coir making unit installed at Panthura was transferred to Sree Chitra Home and an officer of the Kalavoor Coir Training center was brought to give training to the inmates in making coir products.

The food supplied was very inadequate in quality and quantity and all the inmates were badly ill nourished. Dr G. Velayudhan celebrated a series of his birthdays in Sree Chitra Home, inviting a large number of prominent people from and around the city. On these days, the inmates of the Home were able to enjoy a grand feast. The doctor’s good example was followed by many of the rich invitees who also began conducting feasts in the Home in connection with their own birthdays or on other auspicious days of those of their relatives. The dietician of G.G. Hospital made a study of the food provided at the Home and found that if an additional Rs. 2500-3000 was spent per day, the inmates could be provided with a balanced diet in sufficient quantity. A public request was therefore made through the press (Kerala Kaumudi twice and Mathrubhoomi) to rich people of Thiruvananthapuram district to come forward to bear one day’s expenditure for diet in a year, in relation to any of the auspicious days, for the benefit of the inmates of the Home. In response, many people have started giving money and feasts. Personal requests are being made to the rich and the affluent in Thiruvananthapuram district for this purpose.

Thanks to Dr G. Velayudhan’s initiation the children who have been totally confined within the walls of the Home, are now being taken occasionally for an outing to tourist centers like Shanghumugham, Veli, Museum etc and also for entertainment like circus, cinema and they are given light refreshments at the time of outing.

Old Age Home

Dr G. Velayudhan has offered to construct a building for the aged destitutes at Sree Chitra Home. A plan for a two storey building to accommodate 20 persons (ten male and ten female) at an estimated cost of Rs. 10 lakhs has been prepared and submitted to government for sanction. But sanction not yet received. Now he has taken steps to

Dr G. Velayudhan has been selected as a best Tax Payer in the charge of the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Cochin and felicitated at a function held at Ernakulam for presenting the award by Sri A. Balasubramaniam, Chairman Central Board of Direct Taxes in the presence of the Hon. Minister of State for Finance Sri V. Dhauanjaya Kumar.

XI. Self employment Scheme among unemployed women

It was proposed to give tailoring training to the unemployed women in and around Thiruvananthapuram city. Training centers were started in 9 NHGs

of Pattom-Kesavadasapuram ADS in 1998. Basic objective of the programme was to support the women empowerment programme by helping them to generate income through tailoring works. The tailoring units worked from 6 to 9 months in each NHG and a honararium of Rs. 500/- pm was provided to the tailoring mistress. 122 women were trained in these centers. Out of this 33 women are now engaged in professional tailoring and 55 women are engaged in personal tailoring.

Now this programme has been extended to 9 Panchayat (Athiyanoor, Balaramapuram, Maranallor, Pallichal, Malayinkil, Vilappil, Kottukal, Venganoor and Varkala Vilabhagum) and each center is provided with 3 sewing machines and a tailoring mistress. The women groups are responding very positively and the centers are working well.

Unemployed girls are also given training in Home Nursing at G.G. Hospital. This enables them to take up the job of looking after the sick. It gives them an opportunity to stand on their own legs economically and also provide proper attentions and care to those aili

Rural health Services

Free Clinic at Attingal:

ost price at the clinic. Thousands of iron and multi-vitamin tablets obtained from different medical companies were distributed to pregnant ladies, free of cost at the rate of one per day. The traveling expenditure and cost of refreshments were paid from the Doctor’s pocket. About 33,000 patients were thus treated in this clinic. Special emphasis was given for ANC and family planning. If every doctor in the Medical College of this status had done the same service, a large number of populations could have been covered.

Free Clinic at Vakkom:

It was the ambition of the doctor to conduct a community study in one of the poorest Panchayats in Thiruvananthapuram District. With this in view, he submitted many schemes to the authorities and the Universities but they could not be implemented. So, he started a study of his own, and Vakkom Panchayat, being the poorest, was selected. To enlist the confidence and cooperation of the people of the panchayat, weekly clinic was started (in the early 70s) with the cooperation of the panchayat authorities. It proved very popular.

In fact, the enthusiasm was so great that the Panchayat had to levy Rs. 1/- as registration fee for the first visit in order to control the crowd. Most of

the people of the Panchayat were ill-nourished, anaemic and infected with TB, leprosy and worm infestation was very common. TB being one of the common disease of the Panchayat, mass X-raying was resorted to with the help of the TB center at Thiruvananthapuram. The clinic functioned for about 2 years. Those who required special treatment and all delivery cases were referred to the Medical College Hospital from both these centers.

Clinic at Varkala

A large number of patients coming to G.G. Hospital are from Varkala. During the past 18 years G.G. Hospital runs a weekly rural health center at Varkala, about 50 kms, from Thiruvananthapuram mainly for the benefit of pregnant women who other wise have to come all the way to Thiruvananthapuram for consultation frequently. A Bi- weekly children’s clinic is also functioning. 70 to 120 women and 50-80 children attend these clinics, which have proved a blessing to the people of this rural area. Those who require delivery or hospitalization come to G.G. Hospital or Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram.

Dr G. Velayudhan has been extending financial aid for education to bright students who want to continue their studies and come to his notice through press or through personal contact that they are not in a financial position to do so. The financial aid is being given unconditionally but they should stay in the college hostel and should not receive financial aid from any other source.

Two medicos (one boy and a girl) were financed and both passed MBBS.
One girl has passed Geology MSc. Course.
Two girls – one from Chitra Home and the other selected at the request of Intercaste Marriage Association were given financial aid to study in the Women’s College, Thiruvananthapuram. Both of them passed the Pre-degree Examinaiton and one of them is continuing her studies in the Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram.
A Harijan girl from Malappuram, the daughter of a very poor man, secured admission into the Medical College. But she could not join the college due to lack of finance. On knowing about this through “The Indian Express” , the doctor offered her complete financial help. She accepted the offer and has passed MD in Gynaecolgoy.
A Muslim girl who passed BA in Arabic (1^st Rank) was also offered financial aid to study for MA and was given Rs. 5,000/- as first installment, but she did not stay in the hostel and was receiving money from other sources also.
Another girl who was helped financially has passed BE from Thiruvananthapuram Engineering College.
One girl studying for BVSC first year, Veterinary College, Mannuthy, Thrichur was given all financial help. She has passed the course and is now employed.
One very talented girl now studying in 9^th standard in Holy Angels Convent, Thiruvananthapuam who is very much talented in fine arts is getting a financial aid of Rs. 2500/- permonth for special tuition in Dance, Music, Painting etc.

Velayudhan is giving breakfast for 3850, now 10 ,000 (Ten thousand in 32 schools & free medical check up)students in the different schools in Thiruvananthapuram and sub urban areas. Now the doctor has adopted one Govt. Upper Primary School Kumarapuram near G.G. Hospital for providing complete health care and Nutrition of the students. There he is providing complete medical check up, free treatment, counseling for the adolescent and also giving them breakfast and supplementing lunch.

ng member and even if the father is there only a few of them extend their support to the family. Others are addicted to drinking and other vices. The mother may not have permanent job. Most of them go for daily wages. Excepting a few most of them are without job on all days. Thus the good majority of these small children do not get anything to eat in the night also.

If the small children during their fast developing and growing age are denied of food particularly glucose not only they will not be able to learn lessons but they will misbehave and show disobedience and later on they become antisocial elements. Their body build will be poor and growth will be badly retarded and stunted and will be underweight and illnourished. These are the children going to be the future citizens of India who are supposed to steer the country. These children form the majority of the population.

In these circumstances if any body or a

ny Government want to improve the future generation in intelligence as well as in physical health they must look after these children at this younger age. The magnitude of this job is unimaginable and the Government machinery alone will not be able to tackle the problem. Every citizen of India who has least concern about the future of the country must come forward to find out a solution for this.

In the Kumarapuram school we are giving “Idilies with chutney” to each student every day and curries to make their Kanji Noon meal from 2004 August onwards.

The effect of this much of feeding on this young children was well noticeable and greatly encouraging. Therefore the programme was extended to other schools. Now 3850 ( Now10,000 Ten Thousand – 32 schools) students in eight schools get the benefit. The students are getting this benefits only for 20 to 25 days in a month and that too only for 10 months in a year in a school year.
